"I am completing work on a book manuscript dealing with deaths on Oregon/California/Mormon Trails, 1841-65 and encountered your post for the death of Smith DESKINS http://www.coalexchange.com/smith/mcdowella/pafg723.htm "On October 7, 1850, the St. Louis Missouri Republican published a list entitled "Deaths On The Plains." One of the names was "Duskins, S, age 35", who died June 23, 1850 of cholera at Ft. Laramie and was from Grundy County, MO. "Although the family name is spelled slightly differently (not uncommon in old newspaper accounts) this entry clearly refers to the death of Smith Deskins as there is no "Larmer", Nebraska and "Lamar", Nebraska is far south of the trail used in the overland travel era. "Larmer" is a garbled version of Laramie..."
