"Warren H. Brown, a World War II veteran, whose longevity and lifetime of Christian service inspired generations of family and friends, died on Dec. 10. He was 103. Warren proudly served his country in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II. He was drafted into the Army just after Pearl Harbor and served with the 445th Signal Corps, spending time in Burma and North Africa. He rose to the rank of staff sergeant. After being honorably discharged, he secured a job with the U.S. Steel Company, where he later worked in security.

"In December 1950, Warren married his beautiful bride, Arlene Grimes. The family later moved to West Virginia. Warren attended school in Gary District High School, where he graduated at the age of 16.

"After years of dedicated service, he retired and moved with his wife to her childhood home in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. Though retired, Warren continued to stay busy, painting houses, fixing appliances and tending his garden. But nothing kept him busier than his service to his church, where he taught Sunday school for decades and handled the church’s finances.

"Warren H. Brown, who was named after Warren Harding, the 29th President of the United States, was born Nov. 11, 1921, in New York City's Harlem Hospital, the second of nine children raised by James Robert Brown and his wife Katherine. His birthday fittingly fell on Veteran’s Day.

"Warren was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene, who died in 2016.

"Warren is survived by his last living sibling, Rosalyn Aikens Keith, of Hillside N.J., his sister-in-law, Consuela Brown, and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and admirers.
