"Charles Cleary, 76, of Upland, WV took his journey home to be with his heavenly father in a place called Heaven on Monday, October 7, 2024. Charles was born December 5, 1947, in Wilcoe, WV a son of the late Henry and Sarah Ellen Hicks Cleary."A devoted husband and father, Charles treasured the companionship of his wife, Darlene, with whom he shared life's journey with unconditional love and commitment. His role as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather was one he embraced with joy and pride, always ready with a teasing joke or a playful wrestling match for his grandchildren.
"An outdoorsman at his roots, Charles enjoyed the peacefulness of the woods, whether he was on the hunt for ginseng or simply taking comfort in nature's embrace. He often spent his free time watching Westerns.
"In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his daughter Gladys Smith; grandson James Cleary Jr.; great-grandson Jensen Gardner; his brother James Cleary; and his sisters Sarah Benach and Lola Mae Slusher.
"Left to honor his memory are his devoted wife of more than 50 years, Darlene Cleary of the home; his son, James Cleary and his fiancée Meckinzie Brown of Bramwell, WV; his daughters, Amanda Lynn Copley and companion Kristopher Young of Bluefield, WV, and Melissa Courtner of Huntington, WV; his adored grandchildren; Micheala and Allen of Bluewell, WV, Bryanna and Hootie of Bluefield, WV, Grace and Malik of Princeton, WV, Tequilla of Bristol, TN, Stephanie and Rob of Culpepper, VA, Gary of Tennessee, Charlie and Kaitlyn of Ohio, Tyler and Patience of Princeton, WV, Alvin (Pikachew) of Greenbrier Mountain, WV, Toney (TJ) and Hayleigh of Bluefield, WV, and Allen of Tennessee; Two very special great-grandsons, Diesel and Axel Lee of Bluefield, VA, who brought him great joy. They were his world, and they held a special place in his heart. Special brother-in-law Cheyanne Church whom he shared a strong bond with. Very special friends Sport and Brenda Marshall. Burial will follow at Sarkas Mountain Cemetery in Wilcoe Hollow near Wilcoe, WV. Serving as pallbearers will be Tyler Gardner, Charlie Clemins, Toney (TJ) Copley, Alvin (Pikachew) Smith, Johnathan Colberson, Sport Marshall, Gary Phillips, and Cheyanne Church.
