"On Wednesday, November 29, 2023, Sue Laverne Clay Hurd, 76, of Saulsville, WV was called to
her heavenly home. Born on July 7, 1947, in Beckley, WV, she is preceded in death by her parents,
Verne Edward Clay and Geneva Stewart Clay, both of Saulsville, West Virginia."She leaves behind her husband, Gary Lee Hurd, of Saulsville, WV, whom she met while working
at the West Virginia State Fair. They wed on October 20, 1973 and just celebrated 50 wonderful years of marriage. They have two children, Cynthia Hurd, married to Ricardo Gonzalez, of Annapolis Maryland, and Matthew Hurd, married to Kristy Sloan Hurd, of Powellville, MD. Matthew and Kristy have two children, Brecken (14) and Brenna (11) who were the absolute light of their Nana’s life. Sue is also survived by her sister and best friend, Barbara Clay Carr, married to Vincent Carr, of Woodford, VA and two sisters-in-law, Helen Hurd of Lewisburg, WV and Brenda Bluestone of Ithaca, NY."Sue graduated from Mullens High School in 1965 and although she was a Mullens Rebel, she was
a passionate and enthusiastic fan of the West Virginia Mountaineers, never missing a game if she could help it, keeping up with the players and the stats, celebrating their highs and suffering their lows. She will forever be a Mountaineer."Sue worked as a legal secretary in Pineville, WV for 42 years, but it was her dedication to God
and to her church that brought her the most joy and she served both with heartfelt devotion. She was a
respected and beloved parishioner of Saulsville Baptist Church for most of her life and gave of her time
as pianist, choir director, and Christmas play director for over 50 years. She also organized Vacation
Bible School, assisted with Awana, worked bake sales, and enjoyed going on church trips when she
could. She loved this state, she loved her home and the roots she had here, she loved the animals she rescued and adopted, and she loved her family fiercely. She was a wife, a daughter, a mother, a nana, a sister, a cousin, and a friend to so many people and she will be missed more than she could have ever, ever imagined."In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Saulsville Baptist Church PO Box 628 Pineville West Virginia 24874"
