He was first team all-state, and his 1988 Pineville High School team were class A state runner’s up. Steven went on to attend Bluefield State College, where he received two engineering degrees. Steven went on to use those degrees during his career, as a boss in the coal mines. The guys that worked with him really enjoyed him as their leader and also respected his work ethic. He was not just their boss but he was their friend.

"Steven was funny, smart, and had a contagious smile that would light up any room that he entered. He was always a comedian the life of the party making people laugh and have a good time. He was also selfless, and loving always putting those around him first. It was truly a gift from God the ability he had to recognize when someone was in need and to know what to do about it, and then able to make it happen. He truly cared for the well being of others. Traits like that you either have them or you don’t and Steven excelled in this area of life.

"The hobby that really had Steven’s heart was playing the guitar. He was a natural and played by ear. Steven could literally hear a song one time and within 10 minutes be playing the whole song. Honestly Steven could play just about any instrument if he wanted to. Steven was truly a talented musician, he was good at writing lyrics and the music for songs. He was talented in many ways. Nathaniel Leon Evans

1. Evans-Calfee Funeral Home, Pineville, WV; Posted Obit.
"Nathaniel Leon Evans (Peanut), born on August 10, 1959, in the charming town of Welch, WV, peacefully embarked on his eternal journey and found sweet rest on November 25, 2023. Nathaniel, the delightful soul that he was, held a special place as one of eight beloved children to the late Blaine Henry Evans and Ida Mae (Patterson) Jones. His educational journey took him through the halls of Northfork High School. Known for his heart of gold, Nathaniel's generous spirit shone bright. He dedicated his time to volunteering with various charitable organizations in his community and, until recently, contributed his skills to the city of Keystone, WV. A true pillar of Mt. Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Keystone WV, Nathaniel's lifelong commitment to his faith added a beautiful layer to his character. On November 22,1985, he embarked on a wonderful journey of marriage with Gladys Evans. Nathaniel's legacy is one of kindness, generosity, and a deep connection to his community and faith. As we remember him, let's cherish the warmth he brought to our lives and the joy he spread throughout his community. Nathaniel is remembered fondly by his sisters, Reverend Dr. Jonetta Carter and Jackie Butler (alongside Aaron Butler), as well as his brothers Michael Patterson (OG Patterson), Derrick Evans (Jackie Evans), Richard Evans (Cherral Evans), and Eugene Mansfield. He also leaves behind his children: Aundra Thweatt, James Reed, Walter Reed, Tamika Reed, Ada Reed, Nicole Reed (deceased), Deago Reed (deceased). 10 nieces, 7 nephews, 20 great nieces and nephews, 29 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren to cherish his memory. Sadly, Eddie and Mary P (Mansfield) Patterson, who are Nathaniel's maternal grandparents, along with one niece, preceded him in death. Nathaniel's circle of love extends to a host of cousins, extended family and friends with whom he shared many cherished moments."
