"Graveside service will be held Fri­day at 2 p.m. at the Pentecostal Con­ference Cemetery in Dublin with the Rev. A. L. Harmon officiating. Seaver-Sanders Funeral Home in Radford is in charge of ar­rangements.

"John Morgan Burks, 72, of Carswell Hollow in Kimball, WV, passed away on October 25, 2023, in Roanoke, VA at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born on December 29, 1950, in Welch, WV to Junior Morgan Burks and Ruth Anderson.

"John, also known as Johnny, was a devoted and loving son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend. He led a life filled with compassion and touched the hearts of all who knew him. After proudly serving his country in the US Navy for 4 years as a Petty Officer Third Class on the USS John F Kennedy (CVA-67), John dedicated himself to a career in coal mining. He labored tirelessly, demonstrating unwavering commitment and diligence in his work. John found comfort in the serene beauty of nature, specifically the woods, where he would often be found indulging in his passion for hunting and fishing. These hobbies brought him peace and tranquility, allowing him to connect with the world around him.

"Above all, John was a devoted father, particularly to his son Jonathan, whom he lovingly cared for since the day he was born. His selflessness and dedication to his family were truly admirable and will be cherished forever.

"John was preceded in death by his parents, Junior Morgan Burks, and Ruth Anderson; his daughter, Tina Louise Burks; his brother, Robert Allen Burks; his sister, Terrie Burks Dillon; his stepdad, George Jones; and his special friend, Frankie Campbell.

"John is survived by his sons: John Burks Jr. (Lil John) and wife Melissa, Jonathan Allen Burks, and Ryan Allen Burks; step-sons: Milton Smallwood Jr, Blake Smallwood, and Brayden Smallwood; step-daughters: Santana Dotson and Hannah Smallwood; grandson: Brandon Tyler Burks; great-granddaughter: Everleigh Burks; sisters: Pamela and husband Scotty Pilkins, Brenda and husband Jimmy Dotson, Sandy and husband Lewis Fletcher, Karen Lewanick; special friends: Frog Mitchem, Bobby Campbell, and Danny Williams; and a host of other family and friends.

"Services will be held at 12:00 PM Noon on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at the Fanning Funeral Home Chapel in Welch, West Virginia with Brother Dale Roberts, and Brother Benjamin Smith officiating. Friends may visit with the family Sunday, October 29, 2023, from 11 a.m. to the time of services at the Chapel of Fanning Funeral Home in Welch, WV. Burial will follow at Burks Family Cemetery in Carswell Hollow, Kimball, WV. Pallbearers will be Brandon Burks, Chase Burks, Charles Burks, Ryan Burks, Milton Smallwood Jr., and James Mitchum. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the VFW Post and the West Virginia National Honor Guard.
