"Pete Herman Hammes, 86, of Goodview, passed away Tuesday, September 29, 2014."He was a veteran of the US Air Force and retired as Staff Sergeant, serving 3 years. He worked at D.L. Auld Co. as a tool die maker for 40 years in Columbus, OH. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joann Vance Hammes; parents, Roy C. and Ethel Hammes; brothers, Roy Hammes, Don Hammes and Charles Hammes; sisters, Josephine Oliver, Mary Alice Emmons, Zuma Gott and Nellie Jenkinson.
"Pete was an avid gardner in retirement. He grew rose gardens at his home in Columbus, and after he moved to Goodview, he raised many varieties of flowers, plus grapes, Blackberries and raspberries. Pete also enjoyed feeding and watching the birds. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #148 Iaeger AF&AM.
"Pete is survived by a cousin, Betty Peck of Huntington, WV; sisters-in-law Edith Hammes of Winchester, VA, Marilyn Hammes of Roanoke, Donna Hammes of Gaithersburg, MD and Mary Hammes of Roanoke; brother-in-law, Richard Gott of Goodview, VA and Jacksonville, FL; numerous nieces and nephews and devoted friend, Josephine Dickerson of Vinton, VA.
