"PINEVILLE — Dewey L. McKinney, 87, of Pine-ville, formerly of Peterstown, was called Home to be with his Lord in the early hours of Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at Wyoming Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, New Richmond, after several years of illness and debility. "Dewey was born at home on Feb. 27, 1919, in Basin, the youngest child of William Blackburn and Nancy Elizabeth McKinney, who preceded him in death. He was the sole surviving member of a family of nine sons and three daughters. "He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Violet Church McKinney, in 1998, after nearly 59 years of marriage, and a son, Dewey Rodney McKinney. "After attending school in Basin and being graduated from Herndon High School, where he excelled in athletics and in speech and debate, Mr. McKinney was employed for short times by Church Brothers Lumber Co. and by the Virginian Railway. He then attended and was graduated from Cincinnati Barber College before being drafted into the U.S. Army in which he served in the infantry in the Philippines during World War II. Following an honorable discharge, Dewey joined brothers Fred and Charles at McKinney Brothers Barber Shop in Mullens until 1959. In that year, he opened Dewey’s Barber Shop in East Pineville, where he worked for many years. "He was later employed by Hargis Mine Supply as a salesman before founding M and M Distributors, serving the mining industry throughout southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia. In addition, he served Wyoming County as its Department of Highways supervisor for five years. Following his wife’s death, Dewey spent several enjoyable years at Greystone Manor in Beaver before incapacitation required nursing home care. "While he worked at several vocations, Dewey’s lifelong love and avocation was his ministry of music which lasted more than 50 years, serving as choir director at Bud-Alpoca Missionary Baptist, Peterstown Baptist and Rockcastle Baptist Churches. Proud of his certification as an instructor of gospel music by Stamps Baxter Music Co., Dewey taught literally thousands to enjoy singing gospel music in church choirs and in singing schools. Dozens of his students and other musicians performed with him in gospel quartets, the most renowned of which, The Jubileers, made hundreds of appearances at singing conventions and as the opening act for several nationally known groups. The Jubileers appeared weekly on Sunday on WWYO in Pineville throughout the 1950s and ’60s. He never refused a request and performed at hundreds of funerals, church services and weddings during his musical career. "Dewey served as president of the Mountain State Gospel Singers Association for several years and led its building of its permanent site in Mount Nebo. He organized and served as president of the Wyoming County Barbers and Beauticians Union for several years. He was an active member of the Lions Clubs in Pineville and in Mullens and a member of American Legion Post 106. Proud to be a lifelong Republican, Dewey ran for public office a number of times. "Dewey is survived by a son, Douglas E. McKinney, M.D., and his wife, Sue Tuckwiller McKinney, of Bridgeport; three daughters, Linda Hargis of Pineville, Sandrea “Sandy” Hill and her husband, Jerry, of Saulsville and Andrea “Andy” Anderson and her husband, Charles “Chuck,” of Chesapeake, Va.; 11 grandchildren, Margaret J. McKinney Weaver and her husband, Douglas, of Chevy Chase, Md., William B. McKinney II and his wife, Amy, of Minneapolis, Minn., Capt. Matthew J. McKinney and his wife, Trish, of Jacksonville, N.C., Samuel D.
