"Robert Burlin (Burl) Phillips, 84, of Iaeger, WV, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2017, with his loving wife by his side, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Burlin was born July 11, 1932, in English, WV, a son of the late Commador Phillips and Mattie Justice Phillips Wallace. He was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean War and was stationed in Anchorage, AK. He was a retired Northfolk and Western Railroad brakeman and conductor with 34 years of service. He was a member of the Iaeger Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. # 148 and the Beni Kedem Order of the Shriners. He enjoyed hunting and fishing but his greatest love was playing and listening to bluegrass music. In addition to his father, Commador Phillips, he was preceded in death by his mother and step father, Mattie and Dan Wallace, and two brothers, Frank and Odell Phillips. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years, Bernice Roberts Phillips of Iaeger, WV; daughter Karen Morgan and husband Densel of Welch, WV; son, Robert Gale Phillips and fiancé Susie Owens of Iaeger, WV; one sister, Gerri Mills and husband Perry of Roanoke, VA; two brothers, Bill Wallace and wife Linda of Roanoke, VA, and Walter Wallace and wife Candy of Roanoke, VA; sister-in-law, Dorothy Roberts of Iaeger, WV; four grandchildren, Chad Caskey, Bryan Caskey, Nicole Ballard, and Jessica Phillips; six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. "Bernice Roberts Phillips, age 91, of Iaeger, West Virginia took her last breath on earth and woke up in the arms of the Lord on Friday, February 28, 2025 at Welch Community Hospital after a long illness. She was born on February 17, 1934 in Panther, West Virginia.
Bernice retired from the McDowell County Board of Education as head cook at Iaeger High School. She was an excellent cook, seamstress and crafter. She loved the Lord and singing in the choir at the Calvary Baptist Church in Iaeger.
Bernice was the daughter of the late Noah and Mary Francis Collins Roberts of Panther. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert Burlin Phillips, two brothers, Halsey Roberts Sr. and Adam Roberts and six sisters, Maggie Kennedy, Mabel Roberts, Vernie Steele, Dorothy Roberts, Elois Roberts and Eleanor Donithan.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Karen Morgan and husband Densel of Welch, WV; son Robert Gale Phillips and fiancé Susie Owens of Iaeger, WV; 4 grandchildren, Chad Caskey, Bryan Caskey, Nicole Phillips and Jessica Phillips; 7 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
A special thank you to Welch Community Hospital and Dr. Vidot. We cannot express the love and appreciation for her care givers, Kim Charles and Mary Ann Drake who loved her and treated her like their own mom.Visitation for family and friends will be Friday, March 7, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Fanning Funeral Home Chapel in Iaeger, West Virginia. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. from the Fanning Funeral Home Chapel in Iaeger, WV with Arble Morgan and Daniel Dean officiating. Burial will follow in the Roberts Cemetery in Cub Creek near Panther, West Virginia. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.
