"Owner Slain Outside Tavern In Gun Duel"
"Iaeger (UPI) - A tavern owner was killed in a shotgun pistol duel outside his establishment in this
McDowell County town Monday night and his alleged assailant - who has the same name - was
charged with murder.
"The dead man was Edward Lee Lester, 21, of Iaeger, operator of Eddie's Place, and his accused
slayer is Edward Lester, 42 of nearby Mohawk. They are not related.
"Following the shooting, police said Lester exchanged further shots with two men across the
street, but no one was hit. One was identified by Police as Norman L. Patrick, the other was
unidentified.
"State Police Trooper Jack Perry quoted Lester as saying there had been bad blood between him
and the tavern owner for sometime, and claimed he was afraid of the other Lester.
"Lester told police he and the tavern owner were standing in front of the place when the other
man opened fire with a pistol, firing three shots that missed him. He fired his shotgun and the blast
struck and killed the other Lester.
"Lester waived preliminary hearing before a justice of the peace today and later was released
under $5,000 bond."
