"Roger “Bubba” Kelly Smith, 70, of Murrells Inlet S.C. formerly of Gary WV, passed away on Friday, December 22, 2017 in Myrtle Beach, SC. Born on November 23, 1947 in Wilcoe, WV, he was the son of the late Wayne Kelly Smith and Wilma Nevada Smith. He held Bachelor’s degrees in Civil Engineering and Mathematics and a Masters in Administration. He Lived in Gary, WV for many years where he Worked as a Civil Engineer for U.S. Steel Mining for 9 years and Worked in the McDowell County School System as a math teacher for 14 years and as an Assistant Principal and Principal for 11 years. Upon his retirement, he relocated to Murrells Inlet, SC. He Served in the National Guard and was a member of the Welch Lions Club. He loved sports, he played softball for 25 years and was an avid golfer. He umpired baseball for 32 years for Little League, Senior League, and High School, including state tournaments. He coached football at junior high and high school levels and coached Senior League baseball for many years. He was assistant coach for Mount View High School baseball team. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers: Ronald, Rick, Robin, Randall and Sister Patricia. Survivors include, his wife Helen Smith of Murrells Inlet S.C., daughter Kelly Martin and husband Graham of Ellicott City, MD, son Steven Smith and wife Kimberly of Rolesville, NC, grandsons Jackson and Grant of Ellicott City, MD.A Mass of Christian burial will be conducted Thursday, December 28, 2017 at 11 A.M. from Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Gary, W.V. with Father Tony Lacson as Celebrant, burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park, in Bluewell, WV...."
