He departed this life Tues., April 22, 2014, at his residence with his family and friends by his side. Mr. Smith was a retired coal miner after 24 years with Buffalo Mining Company and member of the UMWA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Darlenia Collins. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ulla Smith; son, Leslie (Tonya) Smith of Chapmanville; three special grandkids, Breona, Leslee and Aaron Smith, all of Chapmanville; two brothers, Wandell "Jake" Smith of Landville and Wallace "Rod" Smith of Cleveland, Ohio; sister, Martha (Carl) Hepler of Pecks Mill; many special nieces and nephews, and a very special sister-in-law, Violet Vannatter. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Fri., April 25, at Evans Funeral Home and Cremation Services with Rev. Harry Joe Dingess officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill..."

He was a retired coal miner and the last surviving member of his original family. Alfred enjoyed life and spending time with his family; he also enjoyed his chickens, coon hunting, and gardening.
"In addition to his parents Alfred was preceded in death by four sisters, Goldie Matney, Cynthia Steele, Gathie Asbury, and Rachel Powell; three brothers, Harlen Matney, Charlie Matney, and Orben Matney; two grandsons, Nicholas Osborne, and Joseph Osborne; and two great grandchildren, Trenton, and Reese Osborne.
