"William enlisted in Company C, 50th Virginia Infantry Regiment in July 1861. His name appeared on Muster Roll form as "Enrolled not Mustered in" presumably because he was sick and could not perform normal duties."Story posted on internet by an a person knowledgable about the family and confirmed by descendants of William Oscar Neal - Tom and Stuart Neal reads as follows:
"William K. Neal had enlisted in the Civil War and was in service three months. He became ill, was furloughed home and died of typhoid fever. Dad remembered that his old canteen was around; was tin with a leather strap -- no cover to keep it cool. He was an artisan, had worked in a Blacksmith shop and made a beautiful saber with a leather handle and a shield for the blade. This was at the Neals as long as Grandpa lived. In later years it was used to scrape hogs"

"From Multiple Families of Southwest Virginia: "Molly was said to be a very pretty girl. She had measles and never fully recovered. She had pneumonia or TB. She was still trying to attend school but became too ill. School was a log building near the site of the Wesley's Chapel Church. This church is located in Asberry, in Freestone Valley."
