"HAMILTON - Joseph Clayton Fairbanks Sr., at 82 years of age, passed away on Saturday, April 30, at RWJ University Hospital at Hamilton.
"He passed the way he lived, with humor and dignity, and as an example of courage to his family. He was born in West Virginia to a coal mining family, raised by his late father and mother, William Edward and Rosetta "Rosie" Fairbanks. He met his beloved wife, Ladene "Deana" E. Potts, when he came to New Jersey, serving with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. They were married on Oct. 4, 1952, and have spent their 59 years of marriage together with rarely a day apart.
"Joe spent virtually his entire working life in the barber and beauty supply business. He spent 49 years working for Di Donato Beauty Supply. However, for many years, he worked multiple jobs so he and Ladene could send their five children to Catholic schools. He was also involved in all of the children's activities and, most notably, the years he spent as an officer of the South Trenton Babe Ruth League, where his two oldest sons played baseball. He was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox because he loved Ted Williams; West Virginia University because he loved Jerry West, and Duke University basketball because he loved his grandson Will Fairbanks.
"He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Ladene E. Potts Fairbanks; his son, William and wife, Rosanne; his son, Joseph and wife, Marti-ann; his daughter, Kathy Petroski and husband, David; his son, Michael, and his daughter, Karen Septak and her partner, Jose Morales. He is also survived by his 15 grandchildren, Nicole Leonard and husband, Michael, Victoria Esposito and husband, Robert, Joseph and David Wojeciechowski, William, Jr. and Kate Fairbanks, Tim and Nick Septak, Joseph, Jessica, and Jenna Fairbanks, Joshua Morales, Jayden, Skyler, and Raina Fairbanks, as well as two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Jillian Leonard. Joe is also survived by five siblings: sisters, Judy Polley, Pat Abde and Susie Wickstrum, and brothers, Butch and Edward Fairbanks.
"Funeral service will be on Thursday at 12 noon at Kingston & Kemp Funeral Home, 260 White Horse Ave., Hamilton, www.KingstonandKemp.com. Interment of cremated remains will follow at Brig. Gen.
