"Born November 4, 1929 in Dayton, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Edgar D. Steele and Amy Steele. She was a 1947 graduate of Beaver High School, Bluefield, WV. She attended nursing school at Nazareth College in Louisville, KY, and worked as a nurse at Miners No. 1 Hospital, Grace Hospital and Stevens Clinic Hospital, all in Welch. She married Joe Hassan Jr. in 1952 and together they operated several businesses in Welch, including Hassan’s Enterprizes, Health-O-Rama and Landmark Lanes.
"In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Rupert, her brother, Harold Steele, her husband, Joe Hassan, Jr., and her son, Joe Hassan, III.
"She is survived by her sister, Barbara Beatty and companion Dallas Swire of Pembroke, VA; her sons, Ronald D. Hassan and Samuel B. Hassan of Welch, and Blake W. Hassan and wife Luana of Cramerton, NC; and six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
"A memorial service will be held Sunday, December 23, at 3 p.m. in the Douglas Mortuary Chapel in Welch, where friends may call 1 hour prior to the service."

"Richard was the youngest of four brothers and one sister. He was born to Eli Daniel and Rhoda Cock Spangler. The family lived in Carroll County VA, several years in Kentucky, then in the Pocahontas area of Tazewell County. He married Lucy Turner in 1900 and they had four daughters and one son. As a young man he worked as a sawyer for sawmills run by his father and later his brother Everett. He played the fiddle and would entertain the family in the evening hours."

"Lucy was born to Nancy Victoria Compton and John Samuel Turner in the Falls Mills village of Tazewell County Virginia. She married Richard Spangler in 1900, and they had five children. The family lived in Falls Mills, Junta West Virginia and Bluefield Virginia. Later Lucy & Richard live for many years in Princeton WV. After her children were grown, she was a practical nurse and gave care and comfort to many patients. She and Rich returned to Falls Mills, built a log cabin, and retired on land that had come down from her Compton grandparents."

Va. and remained in West Virginia until moving to Roanoke in 1955. Although divorced, they remained devoted to each other until he passed away, December 5, 1993. She will be buried at his side. Mrs. Bower was a former hairdresser at Jolie's Beauty Shop. She was also preceded in death by a baby brother, Clarence Elmo, and one sister, Hallie Mae Christian. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and Sandra Bower, Roanoke; two daughters, Brenda M. Brugh, Roanoke and Patricia A.
