"Joseph Henry Nogosky, formerly of Elbert, W.V, passed away peacefully at The Park at Oak Grove in Roanoke, Va., on Monday, August 16, 2021 at the remarkable age of 102 years old. Joe was known by all as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was the epitome of the self-sacrifice and service that characterized so many of his generation and earned them the name as the greatest generation. Joe's sense of duty and family were evident at an early age when he went to work in the coal mines to support his mother and siblings. After The United States entered World War II, Joe answered the call to serve without hesitation and joined the United States Army. Upon his return from military service, Joe met and married the love of his life, Maggie Ann Amicola. He and Maggie had three children whom they raised in Elbert. With Maggie by his side, Joe worked tirelessly to support their family. He and Maggie were steadfast in their resolve to help their children and grandchild have the best life imaginable. He worked hard for United States Steel Mining Company in Gary, WV for 40 years and was active in the local chapter of United Mine Workers of America. After his retirement in the early 1980s, he spent time enjoying the company of family and friends and working in his garden. In addition to having successfully raised their own children, he and Maggie were an integral part of the life of their granddaughter and were instrumental in her successes as well. Joe leaves behind a wonderful legacy defined by unconditional love and support for those he loved. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Pauline Nogosky; brothers: Frank, Edward, Alex; sisters: Agnes and Lottie; wife, Maggie; son, Joseph Rick Nogosky; son-in-law, Dennis Altizer. Left to cherish his memory are daughters: Drema Altizer and Rosana (Mike) Vallo of Draper, Va. and granddaughter, Dr. Melanie Altizer (Patricia Conner) of Coral Springs, FL. Joe was laid to rest beside his wife, Maggie at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell, WV. VFW Post 1144 provided graveside military honors. The family wishes to thank the staff of The Park at Oak Grove and hospice nurse Terri Morale for the outstanding care and loving support provided to Joe. Fanning Funeral Home served the family.
