He was a retired coal miner and an ordained minister of the Church of God.
"In addition to his parents William was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Lester Sweeney; his second wife, Carol Allen Sweeney; sisters, Bessie Kelly, Gladys Segers, Edith Salyers, Ethel Mullins and Roxie Johnson; and brothers, Shurla Sweeney, and Charlie Sweeney.
