Vickie was employed by McDowell County Schools for 36 years as a kindergarten and Pre-school teacher, retiring in 2014. She was a natural teacher from a young age, she gathered her younger siblings around her to read books and play school. She took great pride in her job as a teacher molding the young minds of her students and instilling the love of reading. Every holiday was celebrated in her classroom. She made sure the children felt special and was very proud that former students came to visit her and / or sent cards thanking her for being such a positive role model for them. Vickie was involved in her community and church. She volunteered with the public library to start a children’s story hour. As a long time member of Calvary Baptist Church, she created a children’s program. Her weekly lesson taught the children about the Bible in a fun, easy to understand way. She was a member and officer of the GFWC Iaeger Junior Women’s Club for many years. Vickie, in her youth, had been a member of the Rainbow Girls and valued the experience of being part of a community service group, which led her to establishing a similar group, the Juniorett’s. Her husband and she were foster parents and enjoyed providing a safe and loving home for children. She had wonderful neighbors and friends, too numerous to mention.
