"Peter Barna, age 88, of St. Albans, WV, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2011, at his Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, WV. He was born September 23, 1922 and raised in McDowell County, WV by his immigrant parents, Michael Barna and Mary Zozulak from Certizne, Slovakia."He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Eastone and Anna Merguc; brother, Paul Barna.
"He graduated from Elkhorn High School in 1940 were he played basketball. He graduated from Tri State College in Angola, Indiana, with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering and was a member of Alpha Gamma Omega Fraternity. Upon graduation Pete attended Notre Dame University's Midshipman School. He was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy.
"Pete entered World War II as a plank owner on the submarine USS Trutta (SS 412) in Groton, Connecticut. After steaming through the Panama Canal he served in the Pacific Theatre for three and a half years. He served as the Gunnery Officer. The Trutta conducted three war patrols and sunk seventeen enemy ships. Pete was a highly decorated veteran. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal for heroism by Admiral James Forrestal for saving the life of a downed Navy pilot. He left the Navy in 1945 as a Lieutenant and continued to serve in the Navy Reserve in South Charleston.
"He worked as an engineer and manager with Union Carbide Chemical Corporation for over 30 years, retiring in the early 1970's. He held increasingly responsible positions, serving as assistant plant manager for maintenance at both the South Charleston and Institute Plants, and the executive officer of the Technical Center. While working for Union Carbide, Pete was instrumental in developing facilities in Scotland, Brazil, Iran, Puerto Rico and Texas. He was a lifelong member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
"In retirement Pete enjoyed golf, long walks, gardening, and spending time with his large extended family. He planned annual beach reunions for his family for over 25 years.
"He is survived by his loving wife of 65 yrs, Betty Lee (Willman) Barna; three sons, (Peter Lind of New York, David Lee and Thomas William of Fairfax County, VA; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; brothers, Michael of Columbus, OH and John of St. Albans, WV and their wives Sue and Betty Lou.
"He was a member of St. Mary's Orthodox Catholic Church in Bluefield, WV and attended St. George Orthodox Cathedral in Charleston, WV.
"Funeral service at St. George Orthodox Cathedral, corner of Court and Lee Streets, Charleston, WV with the Rev. Father Stephen De Young officiating. Burial, with Military Honors, in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, WV."

"John is survived by his w/o 58 years, Betty Carter Barna. He was a resident of St Albans, WV for over 60 years. He grew up as a member of St Mary's Carpatho Russian Orthodox Church in Elkhorn, and was a member of St George Orthodox Cathedral, Charleston, WV for the past 60 years. He graduated from Elkhorn High School and was quarterback on the football team that won the Indians only county football championship. He was a graduate of Bluefield (WV) College, and Virginia Tech with a degree in mechanical engineering. He served in the U S Army Corps of Engineers and stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. He was then employed by Union Carbide for over 35 years as construction/trades manager in the Engineering Technology Services Division, and retired as project manager at the Institute, WV plant. He was an avid Hokie fan."
