"Barbara L. Sumpter, age 65, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital.

"A native Delawarean, Barbara was born in Wilmington on February 29, 1948, daughter of the late Ray C. Hawkins and Ruth V. McCreary Hawkins.

"She was a graduate of Newark High School and for much of her professional career worked as a property manager for Heritage Court Apartments. She later accepted a position in healthcare administration with Millcreek Medical, where she retired as a medical secretary.
Barbara enjoyed a variety of favorite hobbies throughout her life, including cooking, baking, traveling, and maintaining a large and interesting collection of Wizard of Oz memorabilia. She truly loved people and especially looked forward to attending social gatherings, as well as playing cards with friends. Dedicated to animal welfare from her youth, she took wonderful care of her pet cats and also enjoyed feeding the many friendly woodland creatures around her home.
Barbara was devoted to her family (particularly her precious grandchildren!) and was always at her happiest when in their joyful company. She will be sadly and deeply missed by the many people who loved and admired her.

"In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, June H. Lowe. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca R. Tucker and husband Robert of Newark; brother, Daniel R. Hawkins (Pam) of Middletown; brother-in-law, Charlie Lowe of New Castle; and grandchildren, Blake and Olivia Tucker.

"Visitation will be held from 4 pm to 6 pm on Sunday, June 9, 2013, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Monday, June 10, 2013, at the funeral home.

"Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington."
