Benny Lee Mullins

1. Fanning Funeral Home; Iaeger, WV; Posted Obit.
"What a celebration it must have been when Benny Lee Mullins, 91, of Welch, WV, opened his eyes in Glory, where he was greeted by Jesus and reunited with the love of his life, Patsy, on Saturday, October 23, 2021. Born, July 11, 1930, in Hensley, WV, he was the son of the late Jack and Eunice Hale Mullins. He held his first management position in the grocery business in Davy, WV at the age of 13. Benny went on to join the United States Navy in 1948. In March of 1950, Benny was honorably discharged from the Navy and he and his wife Patsy came back to Welch aboard the Powhatan Arrow Passenger Train. Benny went back to the grocery business working a short time for Kroger in Davy, then to the Havaco Company Store where he was Night Watchman and later Manager. He was then asked to become a member of Goodson’s Supermarket where he started as a Butcher and quickly rose to Manager, working a total of 44 years at “the store.” Everyone who entered the doors of Goodson’s was greeted with a warm welcome from Benny and he touched the lives of countless customers and employees alike. He was the Welch Chamber of Commerce Salesman of the Year in 1967. He was a pillar in his community where he was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was married for 70 years to the love of his life, Patsy Mullins. They were married September 7, 1949. Together they shaped the generations of their family by making the decision to accept and serve Jesus in 1958. The heritage and legacy they created together for their family will continue to impact the lives of generations to come. Benny never met a stranger and was always eager to intently listen to anyone’s story. He made everyone feel special and important and let each person know how valuable they were. He was known to greet people with “big buddy.” Benny was proud of everyone’s accomplishments, especially his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The impact he made on people’s lives will forever be remembered and cherished. He loved to share the history of McDowell County but more than that he loved to share the story and love of Jesus. Benny was a charter member of the Welch First Church of the Nazarene where he helped lay the brick to build the church that generations of his family would be raised in. His story of God’s hand in the building of the church and how it came to be is one for the ages. He served as Sunday School Superintendent, Men’s Ministry President and Church Treasurer. Upon its closing he became a member of the North Welch First Church of God where the congregation became like family to him. Other than his parents, Benny is preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Patsy Mullins whom he counted the days since her passing in 2019, as well as two brothers: Vincent Mullins and Jack Mullins. Left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted children: one son, Dan Mullins and wife Janie of Hermitage, TN, two daughters: Kathy Watson and husband Jack, Judy Long and husband Scott all of Welch; ten grandchildren: Chris Watson, Paul Mullins, Matthew Mullins, Lisa Rose, Sarah Barnett, Rebecca Palmer, Rachael Lester, Olivia Castle, Gideon Richardson, and Daniel Long. Twenty Great Grandchildren here on Earth, and three angel babies in heaven, two sisters: Betty Giamo of NJ and Darnell Mullins and husband Robert of Princeton, WV. A host of nieces, nephews and loving family and friends. A Going Home Celebration will be held on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at 11:00 AM with Reverend Ollie Parsons, Reverend Darrell Long and Reverend Scott Long officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, WV where military rights will be performed by VFW Post 1144. Grandsons and great grandsons will have the honor of serving as pallbearers. Friends may call on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Fanning Funeral Home Chapel in Welch, WV. Covid-19 safety protocols remain in place; compliance with masks and responsible social distancing are respectfully requested during your visit. Fanning Funeral Home of Welch is serving the family.
