" Fred W. Muckenfuss, 93, of Welch, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2016 at Welch Community Hospital following a short illness. He was born in Welch on August 16, 1922 and was the son of the late William and Emma Rehberger Muckenfuss. He resided in Welch his entire life. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, William and Bob and sister, Emma Todd."He graduated from Welch High School in the Class of 1940 and retired from the Welch Daily News as Mechanical Superintendent after 50 years of service in 1988. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as Captain of the 202nd Combat Engineer Battalion. He received the Silver Star and served in Normandy, Northern France and Germany under Gen. George Patton.
"He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Welch for 66 years. He was currently serving as Financial Secretary and a member of the Administrative Council, Board of Trustees and was a former Sunday School teacher and usher. He enjoyed watching baseball and was a lifelong fan of the Cincinnati Reds.
"He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Elena Ricci Muckenfuss of Welch, son, Dr. Robert "Bob" Muckenfuss and Dr. Steve Rainbolt of Glen Burnie, MD; daughter, Susan Hardy and husband, Dennis of Welch. Grandchildren: Katherine Hardy and fiance', Eli Hendrick of Welch, Chris Hardy and wife Caitlyn of Roderfield. One great grandson, Bennett Hardy of Roderfield. He also is survived by several nieces and nephews.
"Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Welch with Rev. Olen Butcher-Winfree officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton, WV, where military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Post 1144 of Iaeger, WV...."
