"Harold Edward Herron, 92 of Jolo WV passed peacefully Friday February 24, 2017 surrounded by family and close friends at the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol Tn. He was born in Lynch Ky. October 29, 1924, the son of Bill and Grace (Rivers) Herron. He came to Bradshaw WV in 1937 at 13 years old and lived in the area the remainder of his life. He began working as a young man in the coal mines in Caretta WV until he voluntarily joined the US Army in 1943. Harold served in the 120th AAA Battery D 3rd Army under the direction of General Patton. He was involved in the Normandy Invasion Battle of the Bulge, as well as 3 other major battles. He was awarded 5 battle stars during his time and he was honorably discharged December 1945."Harold returned to WV where he married his sweetheart Bertha Stewart December 24, 1945. He returned to work in the coal mines until his retirement and he was a UMWA member for more than 70 years. Harold and Bertha were blessed with 4 loving sons, 2 were born to them, and 2 were entrusted to them as very young children and were thought of no less than their own sons. The couple was married for 52 years and his family was his greatest joy.
"Harold was a long time member and Post Commander of the American Legion Post 175 Bradshaw as well as the VFW. He was a lifetime member of the DAV. He was proud to serve with such honorable men and women over the years. He was also a faithful member of the Flatwoods Church of Christ and he loved his church family.
"Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, Stanley and Barbara Herron of High Point NC, Larry and Sally Herron of Bristol Tn, Tommy and Angela Adkins of Hollister Fl., and Robert Adkins and fiancé Andrea of Winston Salem, NC. His grandchildren Eddie (Gail) Herron, Dwayne Herron, Sarah (Jeff) Johnson, Jessica (Brian) Garner, Mary Adkins, Justin Hardin, and TJ Adkins. Great Grandchildren Nicholas and Katie Herron, TJ Elswick, Brody and Lyla Garner, and baby Johnson on the way. He had many nieces and nephews who were very special to him, his long time friends and neighbors RC and Peggy Cole of Jolo, and also the Stacy family who he loved as his own.
"In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Bertha Herron, 2 brothers Clarence Herron and Bill Herron Jr., and one daughter in law Christye Adkins.
"Harold enjoyed being outdoors, working in his yard, and spending time with his family and friends and he was always up for a friendly game of rummy.
"Funeral services will be held Tuesday Feb.28, 2017 at 1:00pm at the Flatwoods Church of Christ on Compton Mtn with evangelist Hobert Kennedy officiating. Military service and burial will follow at the Noah Stewart Cemetery Compton Mtn. ..."
