"Stella Hicks Artis, 69, of the Baptist Valley community of North Tazewell, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at her home. Born March 15, 1937 in the Mountain Fork section of McDowell County, she was a daughter of the late Glen and Mandy Hicks Baker. She lived most of her life in War until moving to Baptist Valley where she has lived since 1981. Stella was of the Holiness faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest A. Artis; three sisters, Hattie Baker, Madrey Pierce, and Pricey Baker; five brothers, Johnny Baker, Beryl Baker, Earl Baker, Walker Baker and one infant brother. Survivors include two daughters, Pamela (Pam) Hankins and her dear husband, Keith (who was like a son to Stella), of St. Jacob, Ill., and Charlotte (Char) Deskins and husband, Tom, of Virginia; one sister, Pearly Rasnake of Conover, N.C.; one brother, Arnold Baker of Dallas, N.C.; two grandsons, Nathaniel Ross Hankins and Daniel Lee Hankins; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va., with the Rev. Hubert Stanley and the Rev. Sammy Barnett officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va. Pallbearers will be J.L. Lambert Jr., Matthew Pennington, Josh Pennington, Roger Smith, Barry White, and Curtis Neel. Francis married Legan Hagan Parker. Their 3 children were Earl, Edith and Edna Parker. The family moved to Bartley WV so Francis could support his family by working in the coal mines. After his first wife died, then Francis married Rachel Hall. Their children were Francis JR, Jacqueline, and Billy Parker. Next Francis married Elizabeth Parker and they had one daughter.
