"I am Larry E. Smith with ancestors traced back to Rev War times. My ggg grandfather was Shorten Smith. While we are not related I thought you would enjoy this commonality . Shorten also entered the Rev Army in Duchess Co, NY and located in Montgomery Co after the war. He had 112 acres of land on the South side of Pilot Mt which was located just SE of Christiansburg, VA. Asa and shorten served in different units but there must have been some discussion after the War ended to say Montgomery Co, VA was the place to settle. Shorten moved on to Tazewell Co, VA in what is now Wyoming and McDowell Co, WV. I was fortunate enough to run across an affidavit he gave in 1818 in Tazewell where he describes his unit's movements during the war. He was at left as a guard at the battle of Princeton in Jan 1777 and was discharged at Snake Hill, NJ, a rock formation in the marshes west of NY City.

"Larry, sorry about being late in answering your email. My great great great grandfather was Asa Hall,Sr. Asa brother Jesse Hall, Nathaniel Crandall with several other men move to Montgomery county, Virginia in the early 1790s from Dutchess County New York. Asa came in 1795 to Montgomery County, Virginia. Asa Hall, Sr. was buried in Hall's United Methodist Church Cemetery. The church was named after him because they said it was a good old soul. This church is on the Ironto exit above Christiansburg, Montgomery County, Virginia. Shorten Smith probably knew Jesse Hall, Asa Hall,Sr., Nathaniel Crandall (he was the father of my great-grandmother Martha Crandall Hall) and the other men from Dutchess County. It's a good possibility that Shorten Smith that he came with these men to Montgomery County, Virginia in the 1790s. They probably talked about the Revolutionary War.
