"I just read that one of my favorite human beings of all time has passed away. Coach John Harris…. How can I even begin to put into words what this man means to me?
I remember when I first had him for class. To say he was a bit intimidating is an understatement. He ran detention hall. To me that must have meant he was mean… but I very quickly learned he was quite the opposite. John was one of the kindest men I had ever met. He found out that I had a huge passion for music of all kinds and we bonded instantly. He wasn’t a musician (or not that he ever told me) but this one man single handedly impacted my songwriting by introducing me to so many singer/songwriters that I may have never heard back in the 90s since the internet wasn’t what it is now. He would pull up to the house and blow his horn and I’d come rushing out. He would be waiting with his trunk open, entirely full of CDs. Most of bands and artists I had never heard of. He would pick out several and tell me to go study them. I did. I learned more from him outside of class than in the classroom just from these albums.

"I lost track of him at some point and it was a few years before I would hear from him. One day he popped up on Facebook. We messaged regularly. One day he tells me he was thinning his massive cd collection and wanted to know if I’d like some. I asked what he wanted for them. He replied “au grati”. He wouldn’t even let me pay for shipping. Then this incredibly large box appeared on my doorstep. I was floored. He wrote a note to me and told me to keep what I liked, get rid of what I didn’t, but to enjoy them. I found this note last week and really missed him more, though I thought of him very frequently. He shut down his account some time after and I hadn’t heard from him since. To hear he has passed and I cannot talk music with him again crushes my heart.

"To everyone that knew him, you will all agree he was an exceptional person. He taught me English. He taught me literature. He taught me about music outside of class. But most of all, he impacted me by teaching me to respect everyone and how to be a good man. Saying I will miss John is minuscule compared to what my heart feels right now.

"Rest In Peace, Coach John Harris. I look forward to talking music with you again one day as we walk the streets of gold together. I love you more than you will ever know, my dear friend."
