"Robert Lee Reed Sr., 78, of 455 Evergreen Drive, Spencer, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at his home."A native of Crumpler, W.Va., he was born on Aug. 9, 1923, to the late John M. and Virginia Orander Reed. Also preceding him in death were four brothers, Raymond E. Reed, James J. Reed, Harry N. Reed and John M. Reed Jr.
"Reed was an Army veteran and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was self-employed in concrete construction for 25 years, and retired from the Rockingham Cable Co.
"Surviving are his wife, Irene Turman Reed of the home; two daughters, Donna R. Rakes of Bassett and Valerie R. Haynes of Ridgeway; two sons, Robert L. Reed Jr. of Fork Mountain and Norman E. Reed of Martinsville; one sister, Catherine Lewis of Lexington, N.C.; three brothers, William "Bill" Reed of Virginia Beach, R. Norman Reed of Chesapeake and Donald R. Reed of Munford, Ala.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
"The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Friendly Christian Church with Minister Don Forrester officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
