Dr. Oswell William Lilly, who practiced dentistry
in Welch for 30 years. Dr. Lilly was born at
Bramwell (sic, Flat Top), West Virginia, May 12, 1893, a son
of John Wallace Lilly and Molly Epling Lilly. His
father died at the age of 37, leaving a young
Widow and six children, ranging in age from
two to fourteen years. Dr. Lilly was the oldest.
"Dr. Lilly received his early education in Mer-
oer County schools. At the age of 16, after suc-
cessfully passing a teachers’ examination, he
became a teacher in a Mercer County school
and taught until 1912. He then started preparing
for his professional career by entering the Ohio
College. of Dentistry in Cincinnati, Ohio, where
he studied for one year. Later, after borrowing
money to further his education, he entered the
Louisville College of Dentistry at Louisville
Kentucky, where he spent two years.
,
"Immediately after graduation from the
Loursvrlle College of Dentistry in 1917 with the
degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery, Dr. Lilly
came to McDowell County, and for 18 months

in X-ray technique and oral surgery in Cincin—
nati, Ohio. He was a member of Delta Sigma
Delta Dental Fraternity, the Knights of Pythias
and Masons, and was a charter member of the
