"OSWELL WILLIAM LILLY, D.D.S.
" One of McDowell Count ’s most highly
skilled members of the dental, profession was
Dr. Oswell William Lilly, who practiced dentistry
in Welch for 30 years. Dr. Lilly was born at
Bramwell (sic, Flat Top), West Virginia, May 12, 1893, a son
of John Wallace Lilly and Molly Epling Lilly. His
father died at the age of 37, leaving a young
Widow and six children, ranging in age from
two to fourteen years. Dr. Lilly was the oldest.
"Dr. Lilly received his early education in Mer-
oer County schools. At the age of 16, after suc-
cessfully passing a teachers’ examination, he
became a teacher in a Mercer County school
and taught until 1912. He then started preparing
for his professional career by entering the Ohio
College. of Dentistry in Cincinnati, Ohio, where
he studied for one year. Later, after borrowing
money to further his education, he entered the
Louisville College of Dentistry at Louisville
Kentucky, where he spent two years.
,
"Immediately after graduation from the
Loursvrlle College of Dentistry in 1917 with the
degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery, Dr. Lilly
came to McDowell County, and for 18 months
was assistant director of the Jenkinjones Den—
tal Dispensary at Maybeury. After leaving that
position he opened a private practice in Matoa-
ka, West Virginia for one year.
." ln 1919 Dr. Lilly came to Welch, West Vir-
ginia and for four and one-half years was
assistant director of the McDowell County Den-
tal Clinic. In 1924 he opened his office for pri—
vate practice in the First Nation Bank
Building, Welch.
"Dr. Lilly received considerable prominence
for his research in the treatment of mouth and
throat infections. He was awarded patents by
the United States and Canadian governments
on drugs which he had developed as a result of
his research. His Lilly’s Solution, Dental, was
widely used by dentists in West Virginia and
other states for the treatment of Vincent’s
Stomatitis (trench mouth) and other diseases of
the mouth. In 1926 he was summoned to Tren-
ton, New Jersey to assist in the quelling of an
epidemic of trench mouth. In 1937 he intro—
duced Armident, a mouth wash, to the public.
This medicine was for home use and was wide-
ly sold in drug stores of the area. It was said to .
have been one of the most effective of its kind
"Always seeking to improve his dental skills,
in 1925-26 Dr. Lilly took post graduate courses
in X-ray technique and oral surgery in Cincin—
nati, Ohio. He was a member of Delta Sigma
Delta Dental Fraternity, the Knights of Pythias
and Masons, and was a charter member of the
Welch Kiwanis Club. . .
" In 1949, Dr. Lilly sold his practice in Welch
and returned for a time to his beloved farm and
boyhood home at Camp Creek, Mercer
County, where his mother was still livrng. After
spending several months there he opened‘an
office in Princeton, West Virginia. He died
December 23, 1957, and was buried in the
family cemetery at Camp Creek.
"Dr. Lilly’s first wife was Mannie Mae
Kessinger, daughter of Luther Samuel and
Mary Elizabeth Lily Kessinger of Camp Creek,
West Virginia. They were the parents of two
children, Stanley Gail Lilly and Jessie Mae Lilly
Chalfant, both former McDowell County school
teachers now living in Princeton, West Virginia."
