4. "The Heritage of McDowell County, West Virginia, 1858-1999"; 1999; By Geneva Steel, Tom
Hatcher and Sandra Long; "Sgt Andrew Jackson Froe Buffalo Soldier"; Article; Page 146; submitted
By Jessie Moon Thomas, PO Box 754, Gary, WV 24836.

"The U. S. Army African American regiments
known as Buffalo Soldiers charged to the front
line of public awareness when the 29 cents
commemorative postage stamp was issued
4/22/1994, honoring their legendary courage
and valor.
"For more than a hundred years, the Buffalo
Soldiers role in the settlement of America in the
West has been virtually invisible in the historical
accounts of the period. With the issuance of the
Buffalo Stamp, their story is told on mail through-
out America and around the world. The stamp is
set on a white background and features a dra—
matic rendering of four valiant soldiers on horse-
back. Bufflao Soldiers played an important role in
the early history of mail delivery, including
escorting wagon trains, “riding shotgun" on
stagecoaches and protecting mail runs.
"The Buffalo Soldiers often received inferior
military equipment, uniforms, horses, and
experienced extreme discrimination. They
could not stay in many of the towns they guard-
ed and were not allowed in the parade field at
the same time as other troops. Yet, there is a
legacy of pride, despite the hardships they
endured in the service to their country.
"Although African American soldiers have
fought in American conflicts since the Revolu-
tionary War, the Buffalo Soldier Regiments
were the first authorized to serve in the Army
during peacetime. ln 1866, after the Civil War,
Congress authorized the creation of the six all
Black regiments, two cavalry and four infantry.
"The Ninth Cavalry was established in
Greenville, LA and the Tenth at Ft. Leaven-
worth, Kansas.
"These former slaves and Black free men dis-
tinguished themselves for the next several
decades and became some of the most deco-
rated U.S. Military Regiments of all times. Eigh-
teen Black soldiers received the Medal of
Honor and the units had the lowest desertion
rate of any army unit from 1867 to 1898.
"Although there are many theories on how
the Buffalo Soldier won his name, the most
enduring suggests it was given to them by
Native Americans because of their bravery and
courage on the battlefield, The Buffalo Soldier
accepted the name as a compliment and the
Buffalo symbol was included on the regimental
Crest of the Tenth Cavalry.
"Sgt. Andrew Jackson Froe, brother of
Cheshire Froe, and my great uncle, was a
member of the Ninth Cavalry stationed at Fort
Huachuca, Sierra, Arizona.
"It is regarded as another home base for the
four Buffalo Soldier Regiments. it is the home
of an eight foot bronze tribute to the Buffalo
Soldiers and is a National Historical Landmark.
"When Sgt. Andrew Jackson Froe died at this
home at Mud Fork, Tazewell County, VA, in
1940, he was receiving a pension as a veteran
of the Indian Wars. A monument stands in the
family cemetery with his date of birth and death
and the words, Ninth Cavalry, inscribed on it.
"His colorful war experiences and his gift of
story telling have become an integral part of
the Froe Family heritage. Submitted by: Jessie
Moon Thomas, F. O. Box 754, Gary, WV 24836"
