"Helen Louise Phipps Sawyers Marcum, 84, of Wytheville, Va., died Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at Our Lady of the Valley Assisted Living in Roanoke, Va. She was a graduate of Welch High School, Class of 1943, in Welch W.Va. Born on May 16, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Verneda O. and Arthur B. Phipps. Two husbands and a sister preceded her in death; Robert Eugene Sawyers, killed in action during the Korean Conflict in 1952; Jack Carlyle Marcum, with whom she shared 52 years of marriage until his death in September 2007; and Dorothy Phipps Stater Slone. Louise was an active member of several organizations including the Evansham Chapter #97 Order of the Eastern Star serving as Worthy Matron in 1970/71 and filling all stations of the order. She was a member of Wytheville Baptist Church. Her surviving family includes her daughters, Barbara Sawyers Evans and husband, Jack, of Vinton, Va., and Sandra Sawyers Obenshain and husband, Glenn, of Hardy, Va.; three granddaughters, Kim Evans Hill and husband, Curtis, Lisa Evans Keglovic and husband, Greg, and Tracy Evans Kelly and husband, Chuck; two great-grandchildren, Grayson and Colton Keglogic; one special sister, June P. Morgan Carter and husband, Walt; a special niece, Patricia Stater Britton; and nephew, Michael E. Stater. A graveside service only will be held 1 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2009, at West End Cemetery, Wytheville with Pastor Rusty Mullins officiating. The family requests no flowers. "Garnet Frances H. Turner “Frankie” of Cucumber passed away Friday, January 15, 2021 peacefully at the home of her sister, Juanita, in Newhall, her son holding her hand. Frankie was born October 10, 1926 in Newhall, W.V. to the late Walter C. and Mabel F. Hale. Frankie was a proud graduate of Big Creek High School and was always and forever an “Owl”. She was also a graduate of Wiseman’s Business College in Huntington, W.V. After graduation she spent several years working as an excellent secretary for Campbell’s Insurance Agency in Huntington, Consolidated Bus Lines and Douglas Food Brokerage in Bluefield, W.V. In 1952 she married Robert L. Turner and moved to War and was last employed as his secretary at Big Creek High School."Frankie was a past member of the War Woman’s Club, a Girl-Scout leader, a 50 year plus member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a 50 year plus member of the War United Methodist Church.
"In addition to her parents, Frankie was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Robert Turner, her brothers and sisters-in-law, Nathan C. and Mary Florence, Vernon C. And Pauline, John A. and JoAnne, sister and brother-in-law Mandeline and Steve Wolkovich and an infant brother Walter, Jr. Also, preceding her in death were nieces Amy McCarver, April Nieuwenhuis and nephew David Hale. Also, over the years many precious fur babies.
"She is survived by her loving son, John Robert and fiancée Elishia Pierce, her sister Juanita Hale, nephew Thomas Hale, nieces Deborah Yost and Karen Hawthorn.
"The family would like to send a special thank you to The Kindred Home Health staff, The Compassus Hospice staff, The Amedisys Hospice staff, the now dear family friend Natasha Prater from The McDowell County Commission on Aging and to many others who have shown their kindness and care in many ways.
