He was a retired coal miner and a member of the Iaeger Volunteer Fire Department. He was a school teacher for the McDowell County Board of Education and taught mining maintenance. Raymond was a musician and an author of songs, poetry, and short stories.
" Raymond was the last surviving member of his original family, in addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Yvonne Church; a daughter-in-law, Belvia Church; four sisters, Liddy Reed, Irene Green, Barbara Taylor and Goldie Evans; six brothers, JR, Ervin, Roscoe, Frank, Bruce, and George Church.

He served two terms in the West Virginia State Senate representing the Sixth Senatorial District. He was deputy commissioner of the West Virginia ABC. He was director of Iaeger High School's Band of Gold, recognized throughout the southeastern U S. He was the "Voice of the Raiders" for Riverview (WV) High School in Bradshaw, and an agent for Nationwide Insurance in Iaeger and Welch. He was charter President of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity at West Virginia Technological Institute, Montgomery, WV, and the Berwind Masonic Lodge No 141."
