Thomas Andrew "Tommy" Lassak

"Thomas “Tommy” Andrew Lassak 70 of Murfreesboro, TN died March 12, 2021. He was born on December 7, 1950 in Welch, WV to the late Joe and Helen (Friel) Lassak.

"He attended West Virginia Institute of Technology, Beckley College, and is a graduate of the Cincinnati School of Mortuary Science. He was a licensed Funeral Director. He was an avid railroad historian and model train buff.

"Tommy was preceded in death by his twin brother, Timothy Andrew Lassak who died on December 9, 1950.

"Survivors include his brother Joseph C. “Skip” Lassak and wife Rebecca (Blevins) Lassak of Sunbury, OH and sister Mary Marguerite (Lassak) Melvin and husband Michael Melvin of Murfreesboro, TN. Nephews Chris (Robin) Lassak, Mike (Sara) Lassak, Dan (Danielle) Lassak, and David (Megan) Melvin. Two nieces, Erin Lassak and Catherine (Joey) Herro. 3 great nephews and 1 great niece.

"A funeral Mass will be conducted at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Murfreesboro, TN on March 31, 2021 at 11:00 AM CST. Burial will be at the Monte Vista Cemetery, Ceres, WV at a later date.

"In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Hope Clinic, 1453 Hope Way, Murfreesboro, TN 37129 or online at hopeclnc.org or to a local charity of your choice.

Vera Mae Brooks

"Ms. Vera Mae Brooks age 78, a resident of Princeton, WV; formerly of Iaeger, WV, who peacefully departed from labor to reward on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 in Princeton Community Hospital. She was born October 27, 1942 in Yukon, WV and the daughter of Elizabeth Johnson Brooks Price of Iaeger and the late Wellman Brooks Sr. Ms. Brooks graduated from Kimball High School in 1960 and was a 1964 graduate of Bluefield State College. She moved to Brooklyn, NY where she was employed in Social Services. After working for six years, she had advanced to the position of training supervisor. Vera returned home to (McDowell County), Iaeger and was employed by the McDowell County Board of Education as an Educator, for 42 years at Iaeger Elementary School. Sister Vera was a long time member of Beulah Missionary Baptist Church in Big Sandy, WV, where she faithfully served as a member of the Choir and wherever there was a need to be filled. She was the Secretary for the Flat Top Missionary Association and the President of the Flat Top Women’s Convention. She was a lifetime West Virginia Education and National Association Member of the AKA Sorority for 50 years, and served as secretary and former secretary of the Bluefield State College (Mercer Chapter) Alumni Association. Also, she was an alumna of both Kimball High School and Bluefield State College. Vera loved and served the Lord, her family and was a loyal and considerate friend. She enjoyed both shopping and traveling. Her daily entertainment was reading and keeping up with the world and local television news and was a sports’ enthusiast.

"Those who have preceded her in death in addition to her father, Wellman Sr., includes her siblings: Alice, Cora Lee, Robert and Wellman Jr.

"Vera will be remembered as a very loving, devoted daughter to her mother, Elizabeth; and a loving, devoted mother to her only son, Kevin L. Brooks and his wife, Sue of St. Cloud, MN and to her grandchildren: Cole A. Brooks and Abby Lynn Brooks; her only brother, James Brooks and his wife, Iris of New Rochelle, NY and a host of nephews and nieces, other relatives; her AKA Sorority Sisters and her Church family.

"A Celebration of Life Service will be held for Ms. Vera Mae Brooks at 12 noon on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, 3410 Coal Heritage Road in Bluewell, WV, where entombment will follow. A Revolving Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., and AKA Memorial rites will be performed at 11:30 a.m. Family and friends will serve as both pallbearers and flower bearers.

Robie Roland Castle

"Robie Roland Castle, 82, of Welch, WV, passed away Saturday, October 22, 2022 at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. Born January 26, 1940 in Dungannon, Virginia, he was the son of the late Bishop Castle and Lottie Baldwin Castle.

"Robie was a retired coal miner from U. S. Steel # 50 mines. He attended Helping Hands Hemphill Holiness Church. He was an entertainer with the band “Muddy Bottom Boys” for over 20 years, he loved Bluegrass Music and flatfoot dancing for which he won many competitions. Robie was a hard-working man, and a very sociable person.

"In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Mack and Bill Castle; two sisters, Faye Sutherland and Edith Castle; one step-daughter, Ann Sexton.

"Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Virginia Lee Green Castle; one sister, Judy Sutherland of the Welch-Pineville Road; one step-granddaughter, Kristin Cline and husband Jamie of Gilbert; one step-great granddaughter, Haylei Rowe of Pineville; a favorite nephew, Jerry Sutherland of the Welch-Pineville Road and other nieces and nephews.

"Funeral services will be conducted Thursday October 27, 2022 at 6:00 PM from the Douglas Mortuary Chapel in Welch with Pastors J. B. Robinette and Sam Prevento, officiating. Following the services, the body will be cremated, in keeping with the wishes of the deceased.

"Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday evening from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
