Laban Gray Phillips, Sr., 66,
of Maitland, died Sunday in a
Welch hospital following a long
illness.
Born in Hazel, Va., he was a
son of the late Charles and
Pheoba Phillips. He had been a
resident of McDowell County
for the greater part of his life
and had resided in Gary and
Maitland for the past 14 years.
He was a retired miner and a
member of UMWA.
Besides his parents, he was
preceded in death by two
brothers, Grady and Oscar
Phillips, his first wife, Gracie,
and one sister, Ella Pardue.
Survivors include his wife,
Belva Phillips of Maitland; two
sons, Laban Phillips, Jr., of
Maitland, Barney Phillips of
Welch; four daughters, Mrs.
Doris Phillips of Welch, Mrs.
Irene Wooten of Maitland, Mrs.
Bernard (Pearline) Johnson of
Coalwood, Mrs. Alvin (Teena)
