Burial

"Samuel left home before 1880 and moved to Union, Harrison, Missouri. It was there he married Mary. In the 1880 census for Union he and Mary were living alone so had not been married too long. In 1900 and 1910 he was living in Coldwater, Grant, Oklahoma. From there he moved to Barr, Grant, Oklahoma and in the 1930 census he was 81 and his son Guy was still living with his parents. From Multiple Families of Southwest Virginia:Surname List - words from a grandson of John A. Neal: "Sam rode for land in Oklahoma, probably September 16, 1893 in the second land rush; as he settled in the Cherokee Strip. His claim was in Jefferson, North of Enid, not far from Ponca City. He rode from the Kansas border when the gun went off. They had to stake off a claim and stay with it. He missed some of the best land because he staked out on a school claim and stayed about 24 hours. Officials notified him and he had to move on. His claim was 160 A. The land is no longer owned by the Neals". {At precisely twelve noon on September 16, 1893 a cannon's boom unleashed the largest land rush America ever saw. Carried by all kinds of transportation - horses, wagons, trains, bicycles or on foot - an estimated 100,000 raced to claim plots of land in an area of land in northern Oklahoma Territory known as the Cherokee Strip. There had been a number of previous land rushes in the Territory - but this was the big one. By the time of the Oklahoma land rush of 1893, America was in the grip of the worst economic depression it had ever experienced. This was one of the factors that swelled the number of expectant land-seekers that day. Many would be disappointed. There were only 42,000 parcels of land available - far too few to satisfy the hopes of all those who raced for land that day. Additionally, many of the "Boomers" - those who had waited for the cannon's boom before rushing into the land claim - found that a number of the choice plots had already been claimed by "Sooners" who had snuck into the land claim area before the race began. The impact of the land rush was immediate, transforming the land almost overnight}."Uncle Sam went to school in Giles County to the Kirk's private school at the home of Elizabeth A. Kirk who married John A. Neal. The Neals and Kirks were related some way. Uncle Sam was an artist in penmanship. George Mitchell told my Dad, E.R. Neal, they would get together and have penmanship contests and Sam Neal always won. George Mitchell also said he was a man interested in education. At Grandpa's there was a tiger picture, a beautiful pen drawing by Sam. It hung in the parlor and later in the bedroom over the parlor. I remember the picture from having slept in that room. We slept in that room last when Grandpa John A. Neal died. There was straw strip carpeting on the floor, a fire in the fire place; the bed was high and plump with a feather-bed and a white bed spread. Sam went to Kansas and taught school. He rented a farm not far from Indian Territory, that is the Cherokee Strip. He raised wheat until his barn burned destroying, wheat, machinery; everything. His son, Ed, told years later he rubbed his foot over a match and it dropped in the hay; he ran and didn't tell. Sam was married to Alice ___. They had two sons, Edwine and Guy". Author: Jim French"
