"Alexander Marrs Harman, Jr., SENIOR JUSTICE, 75, of Blackberry Lane, Hiwassee (Pulaski County), died Thursday, October 31, 1996, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. He was born in War, W.Va., on February 7, 1921, and was the son of the late Alexander M. and Rose Sinclair Harman. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Smith."Justice Harman received his LL.B. degree in 1944 from Washington & Lee University, and his LL.D. (Honorary) degree in 1974 from Washington & Lee. He was a member of the Phi Delta Phi and Omicron Delta Kappa fraternities. Justice Harman was admitted to the Virginia State Bar in 1943. He was the Pulaski Town Attorney from 1944 until 1946, Vice-President of the Virginia State Bar from 1949 until 1951, and a partner in the law firm of Gilmer, Harman & Sadler in Pulaski from 1944 until 1964. He was Judge of the 21st Judicial Circuit (Pulaski County) from 1964 until 1969, Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia from October 1, 1969, until December 31, 1979, and he was Senior Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia from January 1, 1980, until 1996. He was active in the Democratic Party in Virginia, where he served as the Chairman of the 9th District. He was Chairman of the Virginia State Board of Elections, a member of the Pulaski Board of Zoning Appeals from 1958 until 1964, and Chairman of the Pulaski Development Authority from 1962 until 1964. He was also President of the New River Valley Industrial Foundation from 1963 until 1982, and a member of the Virginia Commission of Constitutional Revision, 1968 until 1971. He was a member and past Exalted Ruler of Pulaski Elks Lodge #1067. He also served as District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler of the Virginia Southwest District. He was an honorary life member of the Pulaski Elks Lodge #1067. He was President of the Virginia State Elks Association and was the eldest living Past State President in the Virginia State Elks Association. The last position he held was as Chairman of the board of Grand Trustees, BPOE.
"Funeral services will be held Monday, November 4, 1996, at 11 a.m., from the Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in the Maplewood Cemetery, Tazewell. Visiting will be Sunday afternoon and evening at Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski, from 2 until 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Inc. Pulaski.
