"Ellis Vandyke. 44 year old idle coal miner, died from
self-inflicted wounds from a 12-gauge shotgun about 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday evening. according to county authorities who inves-
tigated.
"Deputy Sheriff Ralph Short recontructed incident
in this manner. Vandyke had been in the woods hunting all
day and returned home late in the evening. The family said
he refused supper and retired to a bedroom in the home end a
few minutes later the family heard a shot. Upon investiga-
tion he was found fatally wounded by a blast from the 12—gauge
shotgun.
"County Medical Examiner. James H. Peery, pronounced
him dead upon his arrival at the scene. The incident occurred
at the Vandyke home on Bearwllow about four miles from
Jewell Ridge.
"Vandyke was born in Buchanan County and had lived in the
Jewell Ridge area his entire life. The son of Howard! and
Mary Matney Vandyke. he followed the vocation of mining and.
was employed by the Perkins & Wingo Coal Company at War, WV.
He was a member of Local Union 6027.
"Surviving are his wife. the former Miss Alivia Nelson:
foster mother, Mrs. Charlotte Cole of Bearwallow: six
children: Dorothy. Lloyd. Roger. Ruby. Ralph. and Shirley
Vandyke. all of the home; six foster brothers: Ulys Cole.
Whitewood; Felix Cole. Jewell Valley: John Cole. Jewell Ridge:
Otis Cole. Collinsville. VA; Clyde and Trinkle Cole. Richlands;
three foster sisters: Mrs. Gillis Reed and Mrs. Paul Ward.

"Funeral services will be held from the Beerwallow Bible

"WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Mrs. Cleo J. "Josie" Burroughs Steptoe, 84, of Winston-Salem, N.C., formerly of Kimball, departed this life on Monday, April 16, 2007 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, following a lingering illness."Born Sept. 8, 1922 in Kimball, she was one of 10 children born to the late William "Doc" Shade and Sarah Jane Jackson Shade. She attended public schools in the county and at an early age relocated to New York, where she worked until returning to Kimball. Upon returning to Kimball, she joined Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, where she faithfully served as chairman of the Program Committee, member of the Senior Choir and Kitchen Committee. She was a member of O.E.S. Marie Chapter in Kimball and over a year and half ago joined Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Thorpe, where her son, the Reverend Nathaniel Burroughs is the pastor. While living in Winston-Salem, she attended Allen Eastside Church of Christ.
"In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Burroughs Sr.; her second husband, the Reverend Nicholas C. Steptoe Jr.; two sons, Richard and Frank Burroughs Jr.; four brothers: Jackie, Walter, Wesley and William and five sisters: Annie Lee, Dale, Juanita, Mae and Zella. Mrs. Steptoe was the last surviving member of her original family.
"Survivors include: One son, the Reverend Nathaniel Burroughs and wife, Jacqueline of Kimball; daughters: Rosie Baker and husband Ray of Welch, Sharon Barnett of Winston-Salem; two great-granddaughters she adopted, Courtney and Ashley Smith of Winston-Salem and a stepdaughter, Dora Wormley of Maryland, formerly of Welch; two grandsons she raised, Andre' Baker and wife, Cheryl of Winston-Salem and Shaun Baker of Arlington, Texas; 15 additional grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends.
"A Homegoing Celebration Service will be conducted at 12:00 noon Saturday, April 21, 2007 at Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church in Kimball, with the Reverend Courtney Wallace officiating. Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Bluewell.
"Mrs. Steptoe's grandchildren will serve as her pallbearers and flower bearers.
"Friends may call at 11:00 a.m., until the hour of Service Saturday, at the church.
