"He was born in Kimball. His father advanced his age to 14 so he could enter the mines while -he was still a student at Kimball Junior High School."He worked as a trapper in the mines where his Uncle Bob had been killed. He opened the trap doors so loaded cars could pass through. He worked each summer until he graduated from Kimball High School.
"He worked in the mines while he attended West Virginia State at Institute for his degree in chemistry and math and during the summer while he taught at Kimball High School. His father died the first year he taught so he gave up his dream to be a doctor.
'Through his efforts Kimball High School was certified by the State Board of Education to teach mining courses. He taught them there for 10 years. He had a special class for girls.
"1913 he started teaching mining and until 1937 b1acks and whites could not be in the same class. He asked the West Virginia State Legisla-ture to set up extension courses for Black miners.
"He hired 10 instructors for· the program, innovated mobile units and held classes through out the state. Some 10,000 Black miners, about one half of the state, went through the program. Only 300 became certified.
"He directed the program for 20 years until the schools were· desegregated and West Virginia University dropped the program. The University asked him to join their extension program. He went to Kanawha County to work that area for the next 15 years.
"1971 he retired from the University program and became a consultant to the Valley Camp Coal Company. He helped prepare a training program for 45 years to train Black miners. He wrote "Mine Electricity for Mining Men", "Mines Foreman Course" and "Mathematics for Mining Men."
"He presented records of his efforts to the West Virginia \University library. These included pictures, correspondence, a three part history of the· Black extension service, classroom documents and others." He even donated material from his teaching days at Kimball High School.
