"Mildred Louise Shrewsburry, 68, of Amigo, WV, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2020. Mildred was born August 30, 1951 in Welch, WV, a daughter of the late Normie “Shorty” and Lillie Estell Hileman Toler. Mildred loved the Lord, her family and friends, and her dog, Maddie. She will be missed by all. In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by her siblings: Edward Toler, Jancie Walker, Susie Cameron, Lucy and Jr. Toler. Survivors include her husband, Surbert Shrewsburry of Amigo; daughters: Debra England of Greensboro, NC, and Shyrl Ware and husband Terry of Asheboro, NC; son, Wendell England of Asheboro, NC; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren, and one brother, William Paul Toler and wife Glenda of Long Beach, CA. NORTH EDWARDS — Funeral services will be held Saturday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Mojave for Helen Lindsey of North Edwards, who passed away Tuesday.
"Mrs. Lindsey retired from teaching in 1975 and was a substitute teacher for several years after that. She was served for many years as North Edwards correspondent for the Mojave Desert News. In the early 1980's she was responsible for breaking an important story about a proposed power plant that was to be built on U.S. Borax land without that company's knowledge.
"She was also active in the local garden club, the teaching sorority Delta Kappa Gamma, and other community activities. Mrs.Lindsey was born August 1, 1915 in West Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband James."Helen Kantor Lindsey
"Helen Kantor Lindsey died Oct. 15, 1999 after a brief illness. Helen was born Aug.1, 1915 in Cleveland, Ohio. As a young child, she moved with her family to Caretta, WV. During these early years, she developed her unique personality and affinity for people. She excelled in school, eventually receiving an undergraduate degree from Marshall University in Huntington, WV and a graduate degree from Ohio State.
"After graduating, Helen returned to West Virginia to teach English and history at War Junior High School and then at Big Creek High School, also in War. She especially enjoyed directing the Big Creek High School Thespian Club.
"In 1958, she married the love of her life, James Lindsey, and moved to North Edwards, where she continued teaching English, history and drama at Desert High School. Helen was a remarkable teacher who had a positive influence over numerous students. She earned their respect and a lasting friendship that continues today. Her passion for life, caring and generous nature and devotion to family and friends grew even stronger as the years passed.
"After the death of her husband in 1982, Helen became even more involved in community activities. She was an active member of St. Francis Assisi Roman Catholic Church in Mojave. She was treasurer and secretary of the Tumbleweeds Garden Club at North Edwards. She was a contributor and staff writer of the Mojave Desert News and a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma teachers' sorority. She was also a former director of the Edgemont Acres Mutual Water Company
"Helen is survived by her nephews, Stephen Kantor of Somerset, Ohio; Paul Kantor of Cleveland, Ohio; her niece, Mary Pawlowski of Laguna Niguel, CA and Mary's children, Megan, Marissa, Kaelyn and Brenda. Helen has too many truly close friends to mention here. Respectfully, she would not like to leave even one unnamed.
"A rosary and prayer service was held, followed by a Requiem Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Mojave with interment at East Kern Cemetery in Mojave.

"Services Will Be Held This Afternoon For Widely Known Local Resident Who Died At Son's Home Here - Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Strickler on Riverside Drive in Welch for Mr. Strickler's mother, Mrs. Harriet E. Strickler, 78, highly esteemed resident of Iaeger who died at her daughter's home there early Tuesday morning after a prolonged illness. Mrs. Strickler had lived in McDowell county for the past 30 years, and was one of the most prominent and well-liked women in this entire section. She was born in Floyd county, Va., on September 7, 1860. the daughter of Jonathan and Mahala Conner. She was reared and educated in Floyd county, and on February 27, 1878, she was married to Samuel Homer Strickler, of Copper Hill, Floyd county. They resided In that community for many years, moving with their family to McDowell county in 1907. Mr. Strickler died In July of 1930. Mrs. Strickler was a member of the Primitive Baptist church for sixty years. She is survived by the following sons and daughters: Mrs. J. W. Johnson of Iaeger, Mrs. John T. Parker of Iaeger, Mrs. J. F. Simpson of Superior, Mrs. Bob Mullins of Oak Hill, Mrs. Graham Christian of Sciotovllle, O., J. W. Strickler, prominent coal operator of Welch; Warfield Strickler of Home Creek, Va., E. F. Strickler of Page, Va., and V. T. Strickler of Squire. A brother, Bob Conner, resides in Roanoke, Va. The services today will be in charge of Rev. R. H. Ballard, Methodist pastor at Iaeger, with burial following In the Iaeger Memorial cemetery at Roderfield. Pallbearers will be grandsons of the deceased, including: J. W. Parker, J. C. Strickler, Herman Simpson, Elbert Christian, Strickler Mullins, Sam Mullins, Robert Mullins, James Johnson and J. T. Carter. Flower bearers will be granddaughters of Mrs. Strickler. The body was removed to the Strickler home in Welch Tuesday afternoon to lie in state until the hour of the services today."
