" In my research on Mary Lucinda Simpson I had been carrying her as being born in March of 1855, McDowell County, [West] Virginia. I had no documentation for this other than the Coalexchange.com web site. Mary Lucinda Simpson's marriage license also indicates that she was born in McDowell County [West] Virginia.
"In August of 2012 I made a trip to Tazewell Virginia to do some genealogy research and discovered that Mary L. Simpson, mother Elizabeth Simpson, father unknown, was born July 2 1856 in Tazewell Virginia, not McDowell County Virginia. Page 26 of the Virginia Registry of Births line number 1228.
"Why she has been recorded as being born in McDowell County I do not know. I believe that it may have been due to the fact that she did not remain in Tazewell County but was taken to McDowell County shortly after her birth. One reason for this may be that her mother Elizabeth Simpson was at that time working as a Domestic Servant in the Short household, on March 3 1856 Mrs. Short gave birth to a son William in Tazewell. Elizabeth would have ventured to Tazewell with the Short family to help take care of Mrs. Short and her new born child. By 1870 Mary L. Simpson is listed as a member of the Short household as well. From 1856 until 1880 everything indicates that Elizabeth, Mary Lucinda and John W, all lived and worked with the Short family but not in the same household. Elizabeth would not be united with her children under the same roof until 1880 when Elizabeth and Mary go to Wyoming County to live with John W. Simpson Jr. In 1881 Mary Lucinda marries Solomon Mullins.
"Due to the documentation of her birth in the Tazewell County records I am changing my paper work to show Mary being born in Tazewell with the new date of July 2 1856. The date of 1855 may be her actual date and the date of July 2 1856 may be the date the family gave to the County Recorder. Unfortunately the age or date of birth that would have been recorded on the marriage license had been covered over by a note from Mary's brother John W Simpson Jr. affirming that she had permission to marry and that Solomon Mullins was of age to marry..."
