Marie Eleanor Tuczynski

1. Stafford Funeral Home; Pineville, WV; Posted Obit.
"Marie Eleanor Tuczynski Olafson, 68, of Clear Fork, WV passed away on Sunday March 15, 2020 at Bowers
Hospice House, Beckley, WV. She was born on November 26, 1951 in Elyria, OH a daughter of the late Steve E. and
Dorothy Alice Joppeck Tuczynski. Marie was an employee of the Wyoming County Board of Education as a teacher
at Baileysville Elementary and Middle School. Marie attended Buckeye High School and graduated in 1970. She
was known as one of the “smartest girls in Litchfield” and was an active member of many clubs in high school
including band, choir, Latin Club treasurer, Future Teachers of America, Y-Teens, French Club, Girls Glee treasurer
and accompanist, and National Honor Society. She attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and received her
BA in Music Education in 1974. She later attended Stetson University in Deland, Florida and received a MA in
Education. She had certifications in Math and English and taught music for many years as well as elementary
children and was a Math and Reading Specialist in the Title 1 program. She excelled in all of her educational
endeavors. She spent a year doing her student teaching at an American Air Force base in Greece and began her
teaching career afterwards in Ohio. She later moved to Florida and began teaching at the Lake County Christian
School in Leesburg, Florida in 1978. She taught all subjects to the 4th grade class until 1989 when she moved to
West Virginia. She first taught at the Coal Mountain Grade School and later Baileysville Elementary and Middle
School until 1999 when she moved to Ephrata, WA and married Reuben on July 31, 1999. She taught part-time at
the Soap Lake Elementary School until 2002 when she returned to West Virginia to continue her teaching career.
She taught hundreds of students over her 33+ years of teaching. She was a beloved teacher of many students and
went above and beyond to create an engaging, fun, and memorable learning experience for her students. She
often would collect little gifts or momentos from wherever she traveled and would bring them back to create a
fun lesson for her students. She collected shells for all her students when she visited Hawaii—her students were
always the blessed recipients of her thoughtful gifts. The most important aspect of Marie’s life was her faith. She
was a faithful servant of the Lord and was known for her generosity in giving of her time and resources to serve
the church. She always donated to those in need even if she did not have an abundance herself. She trusted God
to provide for her needs. She was a faithful witness to many and shared her love for the Lord with all who knew
her. Her Christian life was the bond that connected her to many beloved friends and she nurtured relationships
with friends from all over the world. Marie loved learning and always made time to increase her knowledge. She
loved learning about her family history and connected to many people she met through ancestry discovery
websites and sought to learn more about her family origins. She had many hobbies and was a talented
seamstress. She made many Halloween costumes for Karen as well as a few prom dresses. She even sewed her
own wedding dress for her marriage to Reuben! She enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Her hand was always busy
creating something wonderful. She also enjoyed watching movies and could never pass up a good love story. In
addition to her formal education, she was a great reader and believed in the value of libraries to educate the
world. She opened the first library in Coal Mountain, WV in a small renovated Train Caboose car—no small task
for her, but a great success. Marie was a talented musician—she sang and played the organ, piano, flute,
mandolin, and guitar (which she learned how to play left-handed). She grew up in the Catholic church and played
a large pipe organ for mass—sometimes three times on a Sunday. She often played the piano and sang at
whatever church she attended and developed her own comping style when playing hymns that added a dynamic
effect to the typical bar chords of that genre. She enjoyed playing with her friends in Florida and often got
together with them for some Bluegrass and Gospel jam sessions. She gave piano lessons to many children,
sometimes even exchanging piano lessons for handyman help while she was still single. She enjoyed traveling
and often made summer trips to visit her friends and family in Florida, Ohio, and Massachusetts. She and Reuben
traveled all over the United States and together visited 49 states. She’d hoped to see Alaska but didn’t get a
chance to visit. She was always up for an adventure, even when she started developing some physical ailments.
She loved to go to the beach in Florida, visit parks and museums, and was up for trying new things. She and
Reuben enjoyed visiting several Native American reservations on their travels and she always collected supplies
to donate when they visited. She was also the beloved mother of her daughter, Karen. Marie raised Karen as a
single divorced parent for most of Karen’s childhood. While a difficult task for any single parent, Marie poured all
that she had into her daughter’s life and her daughter was the joy of her life. She passed along to her daughter
many of her talents including her love of music—Marie first taught her daughter to play the piano and sing and
nurtured that interest in her—as well as interest in sewing, crafting, and many other arts. Marie also was her
daughter’s first teacher and passed along her love of reading and education, teaching her daughter to read from a
very early age. She was a wonderful woman, known by many, and led a full life, even while she was taken from
her loved ones far too soon. She will be greatly missed. Survivors include her loving husband of 20 years Robert
Dale Olafson; a daughter Karen Baird and husband Benjamin of Ayer, MA; two brothers Edward Anthony
Tuczynski of Minneapolis, MN and John Eugene Tuczynski of Elyria, OH; and a host of other loving family and
friends. Funeral services will be held at 7 pm on Wednesday March 18th at the Oceana First Baptist Church,
Oceana, WV with Pastor Jerry Cook officiating. Friends may gather with the family from 5 pm until time of
services on Wednesday at the church. In keeping with her wishes she will be cremated following the service.
Language in lieu of flowers. The family is being served by the Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco."
