"Helen Julia (Groch) Schuler, age 99, of Thorpe, WV went home to be with her beloved husband “Joe” on October 24th, 2022. Helen passed peacefully at the Appalachian Brian Center in Boone, NC surrounded by family and friends in her final days. Helen was born on December 19, 1922, in Thorpe, WV. She was the daughter of Michael and Mary Groch, also of Thorpe."Helen’s story is one of grace, kindness, endurance, and love. Helen cherished her family, her community of Thorpe WV, and her church, Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Gary, WV. Her involvement with the church was a major part of her life. She was a member of the choir and the Altar Society, helped with countless church dinners, and wrote hundreds of thank you notes. Helen loved God and her church.
"In addition to her extensive dedication to the church and 40 years with US Steel as a Payroll Specialist, Helen was a dedicated member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 38 of Gary for 70 years. At 99 years old, she was the oldest member. She served as Poppy Chairman and Veteran Affairs and Rehabilitation Chairman for years. Helen also served as the past Rhododendron Girls State Chairman. She loved going to the Christmas Gift Shop and working with the Veterans at Beckley, VA Hospital. Helen was the founder of “white socks for Veterans”. Helen also received the “Outstanding Member of the Year” award for District Six. Every July 4th and Memorial Day, you could find Helen placing American flags on the graves of U.S. veterans.
"One of her proudest accomplishments was carrying on the legacy of her late husband, ensuring his painstakingly, hand-built train collection was displayed for others to enjoy at the Virginia Museum of Transportation. The look of pride in her eyes on the day of the exhibit’s unveiling was unforgettable. She would speak fondly of so many memories from her earlier years with a smile and classic Helen twinkle in her eye. She loved shopping (especially for frilly dresses for her nieces, grand-nieces, and great grandnieces), “Grandpa noodles”, ice cream, and road trips.
"Helen lived a long, full life and is now where she longed to be – reunited with her parents and husband, basking in the glory and splendor of Heaven. To know Helen was to love her.
"In addition to her parents, Helen is preceded in death by her loving husband of over sixty years Joseph Michael (Joe) Schuler, sister Mary Gergely, and sister Margaret Douglas. She is survived by one sister, Ms. Irene Sash, also of Thorpe.
"A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, November 02, 2022, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Gary by Father Binny Mulackal as celebrant. Visitation will be at the church beginning at 10:00 am with the mass immediately following at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at 1:00 pm at Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery in Bluefield.
