"He is in good health and still works hard six days every week. Shieds attends regularly at the Baptist Church in Baileysville. He has been a timberman, carpenter, and though he has never worked inside coal mines, he has worked on the outside of mines for years.
"Shields has been a farmer all his life. His farm has been known as the best kept farm in Wyoming County.
"He was norn in 1877 on Moccassin Creek, the son of Perry Shields and Sarh Browning Shields.
"As a youth he lived for four yers in Greenbrier County. His firstschool was the Horse Creek school. His first teacher was John Walker. He attended school until he was 18 years old. At the time children attended school four months each year.
"Shields was married on Jul 6, 1899, to Miss Rebecca Short at her home on Brier Creek. The cermony was performed by the Rev. Anderson Hatfield, Baptist minister of Baileysville.
"Afew months later both Mr. and Mrs. Shields joined the Baptist Church. Mrs. Shields has been dead a few years. They were the parents of the following living children:
"Mrs. Bill Altizer, Baileysville; Charles Shields, an Island Creek Coal Compnay employee, Pineville; Kermit Shields, who is in the insurance business in Huntington; Mrs. Elsie McCoy, Spring Hill, and Tennis Shields, also an Island Creek Coal Company employee. Tennis lives in Baileysville near his father.
"A grandaughter, Betty Norman, made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Shields until her marriage to Russell Miller.
"The Millers live on Mill Creek, near Brenton. Mr. and Mrs. Shields were the parents of two other children who are now dead. They were, Mrs. Essie Trent of Baileysville, and Lacy Shields of Williamson. Lacy Shields was at the time of his death three years ago, the manager of Williamson Grocery Company. He has nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
