"Dempsey Lee Bishop, 75, formerly of McDowell and Mercer counties died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006 at Tazewell Community Hospital. "He was born to Flora and Oliver Bishop on Dec. 31, 1930 in Asco, a small mining community near Welch. "He was preceded in death by two half-brothers, Harless and Harold Bishop. "Dempsey attended schools at Asco and Davy. When he quit school he worked at a saw mill and inside small coal mines. He joined the National Guard and served for seven years after which he was honorably discharged. Later, he worked at a bakery in Welch. He worked at McDowell Armature Company in Welch and was trained to wind armatures for electric motors. He then moved to Coalwood where he worked as an electrician for Olga Coal Company for 28 years. He moved to Princeton in 1977. He continued to work at Olga until the time of his retirement in 1986. After suffering from a massive stroke he had been confined to the care of a nursing facility for the last seven years until the time of his death. "In 1949, Dempsey met and married Betty Joyce Smith, the love of his life. They were happily married for 56 years. Betty passed away in March 1998. This union produced one daughter. He always enjoyed having a vegetable garden. He also liked to hunt and fish. "Survivors include one daughter, Linda Joyce Goodman and son-in-law, Lonnie Leon Goodman of Christiansburg, Va.; two grandchildren, Kelli Leigh Sarver and husband, Stanley Crockett Sarver of Bastian, Va. and Karri Lynn Goodman of Christiansburg; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Crockett Sarver and Taylor Leigh-Ann Sarver of Bastian; one niece, several nephews and cousins. "Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 6, 2006 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton with the Rev. Larry Dyer officiating. Friends may call from noon-12:45 p.m. at Bailey Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton. Those attending the graveside services are asked to meet at the funeral home by 12:45 p.m..."
