Notes

Shirley Ann Hammond

1. "The Welch News"; Welch, WV; Posted Obit; 20 Oct 2021; On-Line Edition.
"Shirley Ann Scott has been called home to be with all those she loved so dearly. After a brave and courageous fight she slipped away with the grace and dignity that defined her life. Born May 9th 1937, Shirley was the youngest child born into the Hammond Family of Raysal, WV.
Her Father and Mother, Robert Douglas Hammond and Edna Davidson Hammond, originally from Franklin KY, raised six boisterous children. Shirley may well have been the most rambunctious. Her earliest and fondest memories were tagging along with her big brothers and annoying them to the point of exasperation.
Shirley was a graduate of Big Creek High School where she personified being a “Big Creek Owl”!
Shirley then went on to study at Bowling Green Business College. This lead to a long career as a secretary in legal services, beginning her career with the Law Office of Samuel Solins, ending it with the Legal Aid Services of West Virginia.
Shirley’s true passions were Athletics, Dance, Animals and Nature. It would not be much of an exaggeration to say she would tap dance from the golf course to the tennis courts, and swing dance from the bowling alley to the horse stable. She was as agile on water skis as she was going down the slopes at Winterplace.
Shirley was an avid gardener and a dedicated environmentalist. Shirley was famous for racing around the streets of Welch in her sports car, top down, with her two poodles, Lady Di and Dodi, hanging out of the passenger window. She was also known for “playing chicken“ with the coal trucks on Rt. 52 – on her bicycle. Shirley was also a long time supporter of the McDowell County Humane Society.
If Shirley was defined by one statement it was this – “She was beautiful both inside and out.” For her, kindness was an instinct. She never met a stranger and maintained lifelong friendships from childhood. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; Robert and Edna Hammond, brothers Bobby, Henry, Sam and sister June. Also two husbands, James Curtis Harris and T.J. Scott.
She is survived by her brother James “Jimmy” Hammond;
Two children, Anthony Michael and his wife Veronica Pinter Scott, and Sherri Michelle and her wife Lindsey Grubb Scott;
One grandson, Julian Robert and his wife Kaylee Grove Scott;
Two great-grandchildren, Marguerite Louise and Samuel James.
It would be impossible to thank everyone who was so very good to Shirley during her twilight struggle with Cancer and Alzheimer disease. But if not for Lou Dillon and Lea Cook she would have never had those last happy years in Welch.
At the Havens Shirley quickly found new friends who, over time, became her “Havens Family.” And Nathalie Giampocaro – her every visit was treasured by Shirley. She provided warmth, continuity and a brightly Colored manicure. She was a source of solace for Shirley and her whole family at the end. Shirley made the decision to be cremated and have her ashes spread by her family at some of the favorite places from her life. At her request, no service will be held.
Any donations may be made to Alzheimer’s or Cancer research organizations or the McDowell County Humane Society.
Online condolences can be shared with the family via www.memorialfd.com.
The Scott family is being served by the Memorial Funeral Directory and Cremation Center on the Athens Road in Princeton."
