"LASHMEET — William Dowell Harmon, Sr., 83, of 335 Cottontail Street in Lashmeet, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital.
Born February 6, 1925 in Itmann, he was the son of the late Ernest W. and Ora Reid Harmon.
He was a retired coal miner with Itmann Coal Company and was an avid member of the United Mine Workers of America Local 9690. He was also a member of the Carr Memorial United Methodist Church, AARP, and a former member of the Old Guard.He loved life, hunting and fishing, and never missed a chance to be outdoors. He also enjoyed sitting around his son Duke's garage and talking with his customers. He was a faithful lifetime Democrat and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents, his first wife, Eula Mary Rickman Harmon; his second wife, Gladys Clark Harmon; one son, James Michael Harmon; and one sister, Mae Harmon Rickman preceded him in death.
Survivors include three children, William Dowell "Duke" Harmon, Jr. and wife Deanna Mae of Kegley, Patricia Jenkins and husband Wayne of Lashmeet, and Chris Harmon and wife Trish of Princeton; a granddaughter he raised, Vickie Harmon Sells and husband David of Statesville, N.C.; seven additional grandchildren, Billy Harmon, Kenny Harmon and wife Rhonda, Pam Peyton and husband Brent, Missy Minnix and husband Mike, Christina Hollins and husband Earnie, Michael Jenkins, and Stephanie Morris and husband Bane; and sixteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Nancy Cale and Pastor Rick Setser officiating.
Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

"Gladys Eve Clark Harmon, 82, of Honey Lane, Princeton, departed this life on Sunday, June 10, 2007 at her residence with her loving and caring family by her side. Born May 7, 1925, in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Fred & Helen Virginia Sims Myers.
While living in McDowell County, Gladys graduated from Gary High School. After moving to the Princeton area, she was employed by Rockwell International and later retired from the Mercer County Board of Education by serving as a Cook for the Glenwood Schools. She was an active member of the Carr Memorial United Methodist Church, Glenwood Park, also, was a founding member of the Willing Workers Circle and a member of the United Methodist Women's group. Gladys loved the outdoors, especially camping & fishing, and was an avid collector of Dolls. But more importantly, she loved her Lord, her family and adorned her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband of 49 years, Sam Clark, a son, Jimmy Clark and all her brothers and sisters.
