" WOODROW AND RUBY JONES
CAMERON
"My name is Ruby Jones Cameron, born
August 9, 1923 at home to parents Richard
and Siggie Bertha Blankenship Jones with
midwife Mickey Ty England attending.
"My parents were farmers. I grew up on a
farm in the head of Pad Fork in Wyoming
County. We raised big gardens, and canned
everything we could for the winter months,
including fruit and Blackberries, laying away
apples, cabbages and potatoes in a large
hole in the ground, usually under the house,
covered securely to keep from freezing.
Nothing was wasted in those days.
"My paternal grandparents, Johnny and
Mary Jones were from Kentucky and my
maternal grandparents Lewis and Muby
Patsy Blankenship were born and raised in
and around Wyoming County.
"I met and married Woodrow Wilson
Cameron, born September 26, 1922 son of
Seth and Mary Richmond Cameron on May
28, 1943. The day we were married at the
Pineville courthouse, they called a preacher
Rob Dameron, who had been painting. He
came right over, looking very colorful with
paint all over him.
"We moved to Cub Creek at Baileysville in
1949. Woodrow worked in the coal mines,
mainly at Red Jacket, Twin Branch, and for
Leck Addair around thirty years retiring in
1968. His hobbies were hunting, mostly
squirrel and deer, and Ginsenging. Bad
health has forced him to stay home now, so
his only hobby is playing the lottery and hop-
ing to win the Power Ball someday. He also
loves to make quilts.
"Woodrow has two sisters Dora and Lau-
rie, seven brothers; Council, Silas “Moody”,
John and Jacob twins, Jacob is deceased,
Charlie, deceased, Wiley, deceased, and
Callis deceased. He knows barely anyone
beyond an uncle whose name is Bill and a
few cousins.
"To our marriage were born the following
children: Calvin died shortly after birth, Wal-
ton who lived in Michigan, died May З0,
1990. Franklin lives in Wisconsin, Wanda
lives in Woodbridge, Va. She is in sen/ice,
soon to retire. Truman Lee married Marietta
Fritz and lives at Cub Creek. Eleanor mar-
ried Eugene Dunnigan of McDowell County.
They live at Twin Branch, and daughter Ellen
whom we raised, whose mother, who was
Woodrow’s first cousin, had died at her birth.
She married Okey Miller. Ellen has been with
the public school system for twenty-seven
years teaching at Bailysville Elementary and
Junior High Schools. She lives in Sophia.
"In 1980, while we were away, our house
burned. We lost everything. We built back in
1981. Our family and friends gave us a
household shower and a lot of our old pho-
tographs were replaced.
" My hobbies have been sewing, making
hundreds of quilts in my lifetime, but my great-
est joy has been Ginsenging with my buddies,
Ruby Vance and Juanita Barnett. We’ve dug
lots of Ginseng and killed numerous Copper-
heads and Rattlesnakes. Getting into Yellow
Jackets were worse than the snakes.
"One day we decided to go up the hollow
to do some “sangin”, but somehow we got
turned around on a point and ended up over
in Huff Creek. We made it home at dark after
a three-hour walk via of the roadway. Submit-
ted by: Ruby Cameron "
