"Joseph Blair Atwell, 61, of Harmony, NC, passed away, Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital."Mr. Atwell was born June 23, 1957 in Welch, WV the son of the late Miles Herbert Atwell and Rosetta Blair Shelton. He attended schools in Bradshaw, WV and was married to Brenda Lea Bailey Atwell. He retired as a coalminer with Alpha Natural Resources for over 30 years. He was a member of Johnnycake Church of the Living God in Iaeger, WV and he moved to Statesville in 2013, where he and Brenda joined Anchored in Christ Ministries. He lived and preached the Gospel and was an avid paraglider. He was “one blessed man”.
"In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Jolena Addair (Eddie George) of Statesville, a son, Billy Joseph Atwell (Tonya) of Statesville, five grandchildren, Shayla, Lindsey, Casey, Joey and Gabby, three brothers, Dillard Atwell (Barbara), John Atwell (Geneva), David Atwell and four sisters, Eunice Edgell, Jane Deskins, Emily Fultz and Loretta Payne (Odell).
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Charles Atwell and a step-father, Woodrow Shelton."Funeral services were held at 2:00p.m. Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Nicholson Funeral Home with Pastor Ray Blankenship officiating. The family received friends following the service.
Local funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 13, 2018 at the Chapel of Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger, WV, with Reverend Clinton Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell, WV...."

He was the senior vice commander of the VFW Post 1144 Iaeger, WV, a member of the American Legion Post 8 Welch WV, member of the Iaeger Lions Club, and a proud veteran of the Vietnam War having served with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. He was a member of the Premier Pentecostal Holiness Church, and was retired from Alpha Natural Resources.
