2. Historical Data on the Glendale Springs Inn.
In 1923 Thomas "Tam" Bowie, Sr formed the Glendale Development Company dba Pinecrest Hotel and
Land. Bowie began subdividing the land formally owned by Colonel Dan Adams. Bowie had purchased
the Inn and land from Adam's widow in 1921. He sold stock in this venture to Messrs. McNeil, Jackson and
Barr. After remodeling, the Pinecrest Hotel opened to the public on June 20, 1928. Then came the stock
market crash in 1929. Sometime in the early 30's Bowie and Carl F. Miller became partners and bought
out McNeil, Jackson and Barr. In 1934 Congress authorized the Blue Ridge Parkway. Rumors abound that Rep
Robert Doughton, the Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee influenced the route of the Parkway.
Constructed in the 1935 to 1938 period, it came within 300 yards of the Inn. The Inn was headquarters
for the Nello Teer Co who constructed the Parkway in Ashe and Alleghany Counties. Thomas C. Bowie, Jr;
inherted his father's interest following his death. Finally in 1946, Bowie, Jr and Carl Miller reached an agreement
wherein Bowie was to keep the Inn and Miller was to take the land.
