"ABINGDON – Mr. Arlington Riffe Jr., age 75, passed away, Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, after a lengthy illness. Born in Wyoming County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Arlington and Vergie Riffe Sr.He was a retired employee of the Norfolk Southern Corporation, a deacon at the Painter Creek Church of Christ and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. He was also a member of the Iaeger, W.Va., Masonic Lodge 148 AF & AM.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Arvella Riffe; two sons, Arlie Riffe and wife, Mary Ann, of Abingdon and Anthony Riffe and wife, Cynthia, of Grundy; one sister, Viola Holcomb of Bristol Tennessee; three grandchildren, Preston Riffe of Abingdon and Danielle and Courtney Riffe of Princeton, W.Va.
A funeral service will be conducted Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the Painter Creek Church of Christ, with Richard Gaminde, minister, officiating. Interment will follow in the Grandview Memorial Gardens in Bluefield, Va., at 2:30 p.m. Members of the Harmon Masonic Lodge 222 AF & AM will conduct Masonic graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the 427 East Main St. location of Farris Funeral Service. Pallbearers will be Donnie Holcomb, Billy Holcomb, Tommy Cole, Sonny Scott, Tommy Lester, Emory Ratliff, James Ling and Carlton Whitley. "ABINGDON, Va. Arvella Riffe, a devoted and loving mother and grandmother, age 82, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, March 6, 2014, at her home. Born in Wyoming County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Dorsey and Pearl Lester. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Arlington Riffe Jr. Survivors include her two sons, Arlie Riffe and wife Kimberly (sic?, Mary?) Ann, of Abingdon, and Anthony Riffe and wife Cynthia, of Bristol, Tenn.; and three grandchildren, Danielle Riffe of Bristol, Tenn., Preston Riffe and wife Brooke, of Grundy, Va., and Courtney Riffe of Blacksburg, Va. She was a member of Suburban Christian Church, and a lifelong homemaker. She loved cooking, sewing, gardening, and thoroughly enjoyed her daily visits to the Coomes Center in Abingdon where she participated in water aerobics. She cherished preparing Sunday lunch and spending time with her family. Visitation will be held at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service on Sunday, March 9, 2014, from 1 until 4 p.m., with the funeral service to follow the visitation at 4 p.m. Minister Rich Pannell of Suburban Christian Church, will be officiating. Pallbearers will be selected family and friends. Interment will follow on Monday, March 10, 2014, at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Bluefield, Va., at 2 p.m. Those wishing to attend the committal are asked to convene at the cemetery by 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
